Perry camp won't film church event

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry's re-election campaign has canceled plans to film a bill-signing at a church school, but a spokesman said Friday that the ceremony will be held as planned despite criticism over the separation of church and state.

"It is a totally legitimate venue for signing this bill," Perry spokeswoman Kathy Walt said.

On Sunday at Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Worth, Mr. Perry will sign a bill requiring minors to get parental consent for an abortion. He will also discuss the gay-marriage ban that will be on the ballot in November.

In an e-mail, his campaign invited thousands of "pro-family Christian friends" to attend and suggested the event would be taped for a political commercial. Ms. Walt said Friday that the ceremony would not be filmed.

Word of the bill-signing prompted a firestorm of criticism that the governor was using a house of worship for political purposes.

"Signing a bill into law in a church is a pretty clear symbol that the church is at the service of the state or the state is at the service of the church," said Robin Lovin, a professor of ethics at Southern Methodist University. "Either way, we've crossed an important line that has a long history in both politics and theology."

We're not all knuckle-dragging Neanderthals down here, although we do seem to have more than our share of such individuals. What's sad is that it's early in the governor's race and things are bound to get worse. And what's really sad is such craven pandering to the religious right is required for Republican politicians in Texas because they own the party. The Texas Democratic Women (http://www.tdw.org) are working hard to drag Texas out of the darkness and into the 21st century. Tell your Texas friends (both men and women, we don't discriminate) about us. Even if they don't want to join, they may find something helpful on our website.

2. Would KBH be a better governor?

I've seen KBH on various talk shows...even The Daily Show. While I don't agree with her politics at ALL, she does seem to be a genuine person, whereas Perry is nothing but a panderer. So, what's the story? Obviously a Dem governor would be the best thing for TX, but if that is not to be, would KBH be a better choice than Perry? Do I just not know enough about her?

Now those three things on their own aren't necessarily bad. Toss in a healthy dose of partisan opportunism, however, and things get ugly.

If you even thinly scrape for information, you'll start to see K's name pop in the record in association with various republican activities throughout the past few decades.

She's the ultimate Heather, the most plasticy Plastic, a vessel for the words of those who fund and sustain her.

She's as good for Texas as Bush ever was.

She is definitely not the lesser of evils (which you should never vote for anyway regardless of whatver mumbo-jumbo rationalizations you'll hear).

an office that is considerably less powerful than her current one unless she sees the Texas governorship as a stepping stone to the presidency?

The last eight presidencies,with the exception of Poppy the "resume president", have been claimed by either sitting or former governors.If you extended this to include those with failed gubernatorial ambitions you could count Nixon with his loss to Pat Brown in 1962 and it is nine of the last ten presidential elections won by men who either were or wanted to be governors.

Off track but I flashed on a great George Carlin routine when Nixon was prez. Nixon,in the middle of his War on Drugs,decides to do some personal research and smoke a reefer(which he pronounces roofer)and he goes into a trance and has no recollection of where he is.He asks where he is and one of his advisors says in effect "Sir,you're where you've always wanted to be."
To which Nixon replies,"You mean I'm in the governor's mansion in Sacramento?"

I caught the tail-end of the segment on the news this morning. But the anchor was already stating that this could jeopardize the church's tax-free status, which it should. I was just surprised that the news here was actually already admitting the fact.

10. christian terrorists strike again: grounds for over turning hateful laws?

in their never ceasing drive to impose their religion on all living human beings,the xians will stop at nothing (slavery, genocide, holocausts). IMO many of the laws xians use to impose their superstitions on others should be challenged on religous grounds. since those laws are based on their narrow religious views, they may not be enforceable on those who do not share those religious views.
the gay issue comes to mind here. while xians claim being gay is a gross sin etc (gay bashing is the last great way to scare xians into forking over millions of dollars, since one cannot gas jews or lynch black people anymore), this is their religious belief and cannot be imposed on others who do not share that religious belief. Thus a law perpetrated by xians over gays should not be valid for anyone other than xians. Challenges to xian imposed gay related laws should be linked to their religious roots.
Now there will be those who say this "since murder is against the xian code (on paper, anyway), and xians impose laws against murder, by your logic are you now saying one can get away with murder by claiming one is not bound by xian based law?". this of course is hokum as murder is viewed as bad, though practiced wholesale among religious humans, by most cultures xian or not. whereas in many cultures the gay group was accepted and even valued as part of the culture (we've got them, might as well give them a role and value their assistance).
So if I was contesting anti-gay legislation, I would subpoena the people who promote this legislation and ask them, under oath (as if that has any real moral value): what is the basis of your belief that gay is bad? The answer will be, despite many artful attempts to dodge, the bible says so. There you have it, imposing your religion on somebody else. Such laws should be invalid except for xians.
