An acquaintance found Capt. Jason L. Gonzalez's body on Friday night, Harker Heights police said. An autopsy was being conducted.
Gonzalez, 28, was a company commander with the 4th Infantry Division at the fort, public affairs officer Lt. Col. Dan Baggio said.
Gonzalez, an Apache helicopter pilot, was a 1998 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He was scheduled to go back to Iraq by the end of the year.
The San Antonio native, who graduated from Central Catholic High School, loved to go camping with his young daughter and son, said Mario Carrasco, a high school classmate.
