Pakistan Hands Over Terror Suspect to U.S.
snip>
Musharraf's spokesman, Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, confirmed that the president told a newspaper during a visit to the United Arab Emirates that al-Libbi had been handed over recently, without specifying exactly when or where he was sent.

Some officials have described al-Libbi as al-Qaida's No. 3 leader, after Osama bin Laden and Egyptian surgeon Ayman al-Zawahri. However, he does not appear on the FBI list of the world's most-wanted terrorists, and his exact role in al-Qaida is murky.
...
An intelligence official said al-Libbi was whisked out of Pakistan with U.S. officials aboard an airplane "a few days ago." The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the clandestine nature of his job, did not know where al-Libbi was taken.

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad said it had no information on the case, and the U.S. military in neighboring Afghanistan _ a possible detention or transit point for suspects from Pakistan _ said it could not "confirm or deny" if al-Libbi had passed through the country.

5. Ooooookay! So there is "no good reason to try him in Pakistan".
Even after supposedly masterminding two (or was it 3?) assasination attempts on their president. Even after an alleged shoot-out with Pakistani security forces.

Al-Libbi extradited to US

ISN SECURITY WATCH (09/06/2005) - Abu Faraj al-Libbi, an alleged top-ranking al-Qaida suspect arrested by Pakistani forces in May, was handed over to the US last week, Pakistani officials told ISN Security Watch on Wednesday.

“We have completed our investigations, and he has given useful information, but there is no good reason to try him in the country,” Pakistani military spokesman Major-General Shaukat Sultan said.

Al-Libbi was captured on 2 May after a shootout with Pakistani security officials in the city of Mardan in the Northwest Frontier Province.

The decision to extradite al-Libbi to the US came as a surprise, as the Libyan national is alleged to have masterminded two assassination attempts on Musharraf’s life in 2003. Earlier in May, Pakistani officials said al-Libbi would stand trial for those charges in Pakistan.

In the following AP article, it's THREE assassination attempts:

Pakistan said Monday that al-Libbi, who is accused of masterminding three failed assassination attempts against Pakistan's leader, had been handed over to U.S. officials.

And how does Musharraf feel about this evil-doer? Pretty tame.

"Yes, we turned Abu Farraj al-Libbi over to the United States recently, and we don't want people like him in our country," Musharraf was quoted as saying by al-Ittihad, a newspaper in the United Arab Emirates.

What kind of info does the alleged kingpin have?

At the time of the arrest, a senior Pakistani intelligence officer told the Associated Press that Libbi had been in frequent contact with bin Laden in recent months and that Pakistani interrogators were grilling him on the terrorist chief's whereabouts.

Musharraf said last week that Libbi had not provided information on the whereabouts of bin Laden

What does the US intend to do with him? Surprise. They'll ask him where bin laden is.

Meanwhile, the U.S. military confirmed that senior al-Qaida suspect Abu Farraj al-Libbi, who was arrested in Pakistan a month ago, has been flown to the United States -- amid expectation he'll be questioned on the whereabouts of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, who is assumed to be hiding in rugged mountains along the border.

Is it just me or is it a bit suspect that it is always AP providing these stories, with no hint of irony whatsoever. And AP supplies these stories to all major papers throughout the world. Almost all of them print them as received. No questions. No comments.
