Breaking on NW Cable news, Rossi news conference....

No Supreme Court challenge--can't win.

More as this develops...

Still no link, but the whores are already spinning his concession as "gracious". My achin' butt----6 months of unsupported allegations of fraud against honest elections officials ain't gracious, no way.

Is this what you're referring to? I'm 5 minutes from the boarder...

"The Republic of Cascadia stretches from 42° to 60° north latitude. Its western border consists of the Pacific coast and a portion of the American state of Alaska. On the east, it borders the American states of Idaho and Montana and the Canadian province of Alberta. Cascadia is divided into three prefectures: British Columbia, Oregon, and Washington."

13. I'm happy about this
BUT

I overheard a conversation at work today between my boss and one of the truck drivers who was picking up a trailer (I work in a warehouse).

Now, my boss is a great guy, and has more or less progressive views. Yet he voted for Rossi and was cursing Gregoire when he got the news.

Why?

Well...his major bitch at this point is the 9 cent gas hike, and I can't say I disagree with him on this point, even though one of the other things she did right of the bat (signing the bill to make animal cruelty a FELONY-yeah!)really made me happy.

The last thing we need right now is higher gas prices. I understand the reasoning here, but when people like my boss votes Republican because he doesn't want to pay even higher taxes than he already does, this is a problem.

As he said "I don't want to pay more taxes, I want them to use what I already pay MORE EFFICIENTLY!!!"

Makes sense to me.

Any taxes earmarked for transportation/roads MUST be used for ONLY what they are exactly specified for. That's the law in WA.

Or, perhaps, have only done so ONCE in fifteen years?

I vote Democrat--regardless. You couldn't pay me to vote for the American Fascist Party (oh...sorry, I mean "Republican Party."

But there are a lot of people who actually think that the fascists mean "tax relief." A 9 cent tax hike right off the bat isn't going to change their minds.

29. Actually, it's not right off the bat.
From what I understand, it's a gradual increase of 1 or 2 cents per year. If you fill up 14 gallons every week, that's not even a $15 increase in the total amount you pay over the entire year.

Anyways, the fact of the matter is, Seattle pays for much of the state. There's the old joke:
Q: What would Eastern Washington be without Western Washington?

I think if you investigate, you will find out that Western Washington is going to get many, many more dollars from that tax than they will pay in, and those of us in Eastern Washington will see very little.

Eastern Washington gets very little return for our tax dollars; most of it is usually spent on the west side.

This guy supports the idea of socialized medicine, doesn't have a problem paying taxes when the results are a benefit to everyone, but thinks it's bullshit he has to pay higher taxes that benefit no one he knows.

Me...I don't really care. But I'm saying that this guy will continue to vote Republican because of his point of view on this particular subject...and the fact that, to him, his preconception of what would happen, happened almost immediately.

34. Just curious, on the efficiency point
Does your boss ever wish that the Oil companies would use the money he pays at the pump more efficiently? When the cost of a gallon went up not nine-cents but 59-cents in the last year (the new gas tax will phase in over four years...), did your boss even mention efficiency, or even complain about the change at all?

Has you boss considered "more efficient" (as in green) ways of energy consumption, including his motor fleet, if he has one?

We can talk efficiency when these issues have been considered. In the mean time, "There's a few potholes need fixed...."

45. Heck yeah
he bitched. We've talked about the oil companies and all that stuff a lot. We WORK for a major corporation--he's just a lowly facility supervisor.

Our single company truck runs on diesel. Bio-diesel is TWICE the price, roughly, of the crap our truck runs on. Guess what we put in our truck?

He trashes corporate America just speaking with him. He used to work for Boeing, and, despite having been laid off, doesn't say much about them. Even asked me if I wanted a job there at one point (I said no--I hate Boeing's labor practices and wouldn't work them for 25 bucks an hour).

He considers himself a Centrist. Hell, I thought I was one until Bush won the first time. Now...just in contrast, I'm a raging liberal. There are very few right wing ideas I can even stomach now.

Responsible use of tax dollars? Yeah, I can get behind that. But I don't consider that simply a Democrat problem anymore. How could I, seeing the Bush Regime purging and spending the way it does? Freakin' idiots.

14. Good. SeattleTimes link and good quote
Edited on Mon Jun-06-05 07:39 PM by uppityperson
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002319056_webverdict06.html

WENATCHEE — Judge John Bridges today upheld the election of Gov. Christine Gregoire, dismissing a Republican lawsuit and so soundly rejecting the party's claims that Dino Rossi said he would not go forward with what had been seen as an inevitable appeal.

Rossi said because the "political makeup of the Washington Supreme Court" makes it "almost impossible to overturn this ruling, I am ending this election contest."

"I don't make this decision lightly, but I don't make it … with bitterness or hard feelings. I continue to believe, as most Washingtonians believe, that mounting this election challenge and shining the light on the various problems in our election system was the right thing to do," Rossi said.

more at link, edited to add the best article quote:
"Unless an election is clearly invalid, when the people have spoken their verdict should not be disturbed by the courts," Bridges said. Nullifying the election, he said, would be "the ultimate act of judicial egotism and judicial activism."

53. Ohio Supreme Court ruled against Kerry
The ohio supreme court already ruled there was no fraud in the election in arneback's case.

The repug justices said there the claims were basically frivoluous look up moyer's statements.

Washington state was decided by 133 votes, kerry lost ohio by 118,599 votes two totally different cases.

Wisconsin was decided ten times closer than in ohio where kerry staffers were convicted of slashing gop tires and ballot boxes were stuffed in milwaukee.

Edited on Wed Jun-08-05 03:12 AM by kurtyboy
I posted in violation of the civility rule, I assume, and I bear the responsibility for that violation. I should have used more appropriate language (I clearly used vulgarity) when confronting another poster who, in my view, was making unsubstantiated allegations against Democrats. For this, I apologize. I just cannot abide folks throwing out accusations that sound really inflamatory on their face, without at least a modicum of underlying substantiation.

Dean2016 did that, and I called him on it. He has yet to supply his 20th post, I note.

I'll strive for better behavior in the future.

My bad----

On Edit--My first impulse was to simply hit the "Alert" button, as I believed a troll was in our midst--in hindsight, that would have been a better choice.

Five defendants plead not guilty

The five Democratic campaign operatives charged with slashing tires on more than 20 vehicles the Republican Party planned to use to get people to polls on election day pleaded not guilty at their arraignments Friday, when a judge also set their trial for mid-July.

123. Kerry 'staffers' did not slash the tires, a Congresswoman's (elected 2004)
son and acting Mayor's son were involved. Secondly, ballot box stuffing was never an issue in Milwaukee. Milwaukee did have some issues....But we have electronic voting...With a paper trail. The alleged issues were with registration and valid addresses.

43. Buh-bye, Dino, we won't miss you
True story: I was at a dinner gathering of local politicians two years ago. Those in Washington will remember Rossi's insistence that he was a "moderate". Uh, no, he's not. The moment the banquet room doors closed, it was a GOP red-meat-a-thon. My favorite quote (and believe me, it was all I could do to keep from screaming at him,) "Any family of four in Western Washington on Washington Basic Health and making $40,000 per year is gaming the system." I should explain that Washington Basic Health is catastrophic health insurance for those who don't have or can't afford traditional health insurance. I should also mention that a family of four making $40K in Western Washington is lucky to be living inside, let alone enjoying the benefit of health insurance.

At the risk of being called crass, Rossi's an intolerant, clueless little f*** that isn't worthy of carrying Christine Gregoire's trash to the curb, let alone governing the state of Washington. I hope he crawls back under his rock. Then again, I'm sure that the GOP think he's the new poster boy for "election reform". I heard that asshat Dori Monson questioning whether or not the race between Slade Gorton and Maria Cantwell was "clean" this afternoon...

107. I can tell you what Rossi thought this case was about...
it was about whatever unproven allegations that little dickweasel Vance pulled out of his ass that morning and sold to the credulous, unquestioning, mouth-breathing masses in the red counties. Thankfully, there's still a hell of a lot more of US than there are of THEM.

I actually have heard idiot freeper types complaining that "geographically, Rossi won the state." Sure, if sagebrush and dirt could vote. Since it's PEOPLE that vote, we trounced his sorry ass, even with Christine's limp dishrag of a campaign (I'm still pissed at her. There's no way in hell the vote should have been this close, but they sat on their ass and just assumed they already had it won. We live in Christine's hometown, for chrissake, and up until a week before the election, we could not get campaign signs to put up in town!)

There's also idiot freepers complaining that "Rossi won twice, she only won once" as if it were best of three. Um. Dorks. The recount is to CORRECT INACCURACIES in the original counts. Only the final recount matters. The others are totally irrelevant.

112. geniph, you summed up my current overview,( watching the case from NC)
QUOTE:
"it was about whatever unproven allegations that little dickweasel Vance pulled out of his ass that morning and sold to the credulous, unquestioning, mouth-breathing masses in the red counties."

That is the sense I have gotten of this "CASE" over the last 7 months.

On the face of it, I still don't understand why Rossi's "case" even garnered a HEARING, let alone a RULING.

This "case" was a big bag of NOTHING!
Rossi made no legal CLAIMS...he presented no EVIDENCE...

So what was this "case", beyond Rossi using a Courtroom as a forum to RANT for the media?

There was no legal "case";
Rossi should have been been denied a hearing based on his own filings,
and his Attourneys should be censured for Barristry.

The CITIZENS of Washington state should start a class-action suit against Rossi to recoup the court costs!

113. The citizens of Washington didn't pay for most of the costs
for the Republicans, the Builders Industry Association of Washington paid the costs. For the Democrats, private fund-raising by the party paid the costs. Very little of the costs were actually passed on to taxpayers.

If you want to know why this case was pursued so long, so doggedly, with so little to go on in the way of actual facts, look at my post about it:

97. I beg to differ
>What if he decides to run for the Senate now? He would be a formidable candidate against Patty Murray.<

Rossi has proven to those who voted for him out of "desire for a change," (and yeah, I've talked to plenty of them over the past seven months,) that he was not the moderate he painted himself to be. Furthermore, there is a hefty backlash currently happening in Washington State against the Republicans, due to Tim Eyman's meddling once again in our initiative system. It was also widely reported in the press yesterday that Christine Gregoire burst into tears when she was told the judge found the election as valid; she has conducted herself with grace and humility throughout this entire nightmare. People just don't like men who make women, even tough women, cry. (Remember the guy who physically menaced Hillary Clinton during their first televised debate? You don't? That's why.) Lossi has acted like a jerk, especially during his "concession" yesterday. To question the impartiality of the Washington State Supreme Court will backfire on him badly.

If Dino Lossi ran against Patty Murray, she'd hand him his ass. Even Republicans admit they have no candidate they're willing to put up against her.

108. A) Patty doesn't run again until 2010
and B) Maria will kick his ass if he breaks his word and runs against her in 2006. His pretending to be a moderate might work for a state office; it'll never sell for a national office. The only reason he came anywhere near Christine is because Christine's campaign was pathetically ineffective; they assumed they had it won from the get-go. Both Maria and Patty are tough campaigners. Patty ran this year as if she had a real opponent, not that lame-duck nonentity Nethercutt. Maria has learned from Patty, and I can guarantee you that Maria has learned from Christine's mistakes in her campaign. No more near-giveaways.

124. Absolutely right---
If Rossi ran against Murray, ever, the margin would be something like 65-35, no worries there.

As for Maria--while there were a few grumbles (including some from me) within her own party over a few of her votes, nothing she has done would ever make me vote for Rossi over her.

Hell, she'd have to be convicted of some crime I can't even imagine, and then her Dem replacement would have to endorse her commission of the crime, and then Rossi would have to actually perform at least twelve miracles benefiting the whole of society, and I'd also have to be in a charitable mood.

Anyway, if Rossi runs, there will be billboards procaliming his flip-flopping on a pledge to the other Republicans (Vance, et al) that his name was not in contention. Republicans have only one real "virtue", and that is an unwillingness to ever piss off their brethren with a disloyal behavior like going back on a promise--even if it's for the good of the country.

As for his "moderate" stance--feh! The guy is no moderate, or he'd have never gotten the nod for the governor's campaign. The folks I know who know him personally tell me he ain't too bright, thus, not "Senate material".

Nope, I think the next time you see him run for office, it'll be for Secretary of State in 2008. You read it here first. He'll try to take Sam Reed out in what will be the most interesting SecState primary race in the Nation's history.

Watch for it.... :)

The Democratic Party has an extremely ineffective methodology and posture in defending the integrity of the vote, so bad in fact they barely can imagine it exists while the sticky hand is picking their pocket. If they don't get it they had better hire experts who do- and lawyers who can perform as well.

As a resident of Washington, I have followed this closely. Rossi was declared the winner MULTIPLE times before Gregoire got it her way. This election was riddled with problems and errors, coming from BOTH sides. What was/is needed is a NEW election! Thats the ONLY way to ensure a DEMOCRATIC election takes place.
We dont like it when a court rules against us on a close election and puts an idiot in the white house, so we should not rejoice when the same thing happens somewhere else and it goes our way. A DECISIVE election is the ONLY way.

109. Do you actually KNOW anything about the recount process
or do you just recycle the Republican talking points unquestioningly? Were you actually involved in any of the recounts? Do you understand what was involved in the hand recount that finally declared Christine Gregoire the winner? Because from your post, it sounds like all you've done is listen to the likes of John Carlson and Dori Monson and made your judgement based on that. But clearly you feel you have better information than the judge who ruled on this case. No doubt you feel you're more qualified to make that call.

Uh huh.

Are you also aware that the state Constitution does not permit a new election without malfeasance being PROVEN? Allegations are not proof. There will be another election - in November of 2008, as the state Constitution permits.

Please, please don't just recycle Republican talking points without data to back them up.

117. Welcome to DU, rd_kent
I disagree with your post. Let me explain why.

>As a resident of Washington, I have followed this closely. Rossi was declared the winner MULTIPLE times before Gregoire got it her way.<

Gregoire didn't "get it her way". Rossi supposedly won the first two machine counts. The hand count (that the Democrats put up over half a million dollars to pay for,) clearly showed Gregoire as the winner. As you might know, a hand recount trumps a machine count.

>This election was riddled with problems and errors, coming from BOTH sides.<

This election had the highest number of votes since World War II. This election was also the most closely scrutinized of any election in recent memory. Unfortunately, there is human error in all elections. To say that this election was "riddled" with "problems and errors" is on its face erroneous.

>What was/is needed is a NEW election! Thats the ONLY way to ensure a DEMOCRATIC election takes place.<

Who's paying the $4 million for a new election? Not to mention that we will be going through this yet again -- the Republicans will insist that there is reversible error in any election they lose for the forseeable future.

>We dont like it when a court rules against us on a close election and puts an idiot in the white house, so we should not rejoice when the same thing happens somewhere else and it goes our way. A DECISIVE election is the ONLY way.<

We didn't like the court ruling against Al Gore because Al Gore had a decisive win, by machine and hand count. If you'll take a look at the findings of the NORC recount, the writers stated that he would have won under any scenario (counting overvotes, not counting them, etcetera,) and the Supreme Court decided to install Bush anyway. The judge that made his decision yesterday clearly stated that Christine Gregoire was the winner due to number of votes.

Gregoire won. She is our governor for at least the next three and a half years, if not for the next two terms.

Julie

119. The judge needed proof of malfeasance.
It doesn't exist. Be glad we have a judge who knows the law and applies it in the proper manner.

125. A close election did not put an idiot into the White House
A fraudulent Supreme Court decision did. If the Supremes had given Florida the same ability to hand count that Washington's laws did, George Bush would be just another discontented loser wishing for better days, and we'd not be losing five soldiers every two days in Iraq, and Osama bin Laden might be in jail right now--ruminate on that.

The Washington recount was probably more accurate than Florida's 2000 "recount" by a factor of about 100. The accuracy in Washington, while not perfect, was acceptably DECISIVE. Unless, of course, you like interminable court battles over every last vote.

"The perfect is the enemy of the good."

I'll say this, its a perfect example of how republicanism ends up working out, once it moves in and sinks its coils into the populace.

the more"Republican" an area becomes, the poorer and dumber it gets.

110. Judge subtracted illegal felon votes from ROSSI!! Love it.
Not only did the GOP lose big time but the judge actually said the illegal votes that came to light should be counted against Rossi. This was my favorite part of the whole thing--rubbing their noses in it.

I especially love it because the republicans judge shopped and found a judge in a conservative county who they thought would be favorable to them. But they found a brilliant and fair judge who saw through them. Love it!

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2002319861_trialhighlights07m.html

"Bridges found there had been a total of 1,678 illegal votes cast in the election, out of a total of more than 2.8 million votes. Most of the illegal votes were cast by convicted felons.

Bridges ruled that the illegal votes should be deducted from the total tally of votes in the election, for purposes of determining signature requirements for future citizen initiatives. But he said only five of the votes should be deducted from specific candidates because the only compelling evidence showing how felons had voted came from the depositions of five felons questioned by Democrats. Four of those had voted for Rossi and one for Libertarian Ruth Bennett."

111. Huzzah!
(My first post here.)

I'm so glad this is finally over. I dreaded having to go through another election and having that sniveling weasel win, especially since I'm sure Shrub's administration would have loved to have a Repub governor over here to do their bidding.

I'm another Washington Stater who is glad this whole 7 month election is over. Now if only Chris Vance and Tim Eyman would disappear into the sunset along with Rossi.

131. He's fake suburban trash, at that
He moved out of Seattle when he started running for public office - because he knew he'd never win anything in Seattle. He moved to the Eastside (of Seattle, not the state) specifically so that he could have some hope of winning as a Republican.

While in the state Senate, Dino was mostly notorious for voting nearly 100% for anything that favored the Builders' Industry Association of Washington, who, not coincidentally, gave him $500,000 in campaign money in 2004 and paid for nearly all the digging for alleged "illegal" votes in King County. At one point, the BIAW dedicated 100% of their office staff to the effort to find more votes for Dino. As a state senator, Dino helped the BIAW push through legislation to gut worker protections, including ergonomics laws. He's wholly owned, lock, stock, and barrel, by the BIAW.
