Customs Lets Man In U.S., But Takes Bloody Chainsaw, Sword

Man Suspected After Grisly Death Scene Found

POSTED: 12:24 pm EDT June 7, 2005

BOSTON -- On the morning of April 25, Gregory Despres hitchhiked to the Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, brass knuckles and a chain saw stained by what appeared to be blood.

Customs officials confiscated the cache of weapons and fingerprinted Despres, but allowed him to enter the United States -- not knowing the gruesome scene about to unfold in the hitchhiker's hometown.

The following day, in the village of Minto, New Brunswick, the decapitated body of a well-known country musician named Frederick Fulton was discovered on his kitchen floor. Police found the 74-year-old man's head in a pillow case under a kitchen table and the body of his common-law wife, Veronica Decarie, stabbed to death in a bedroom.

A history of violence between Despres and his neighbors immediately made him a suspect in the murders, and the 22-year-old was arrested April 27 after police in Massachusetts saw him wandering down a highway, wearing a sweatshirt with red and brown stains.

<snip>

This is insane. Bush claims he's keeping us safe, yet someone enters through our borders carrying these items and THEY LET HIM COME IN??

How is this keeping us safe?? :grr:

AS long as he wasn't an Allah worshipping jihadist, he is welcome here. I don't care who he decapitated. And one less country musician makes the worlsd a better place, anyhow.

The guy, although living in Canada, had US citizenship, and when asked about this, the US Immigration spokesperson said he therefore had a right to enter the USA and if US Immigration or Customs agents were unaware of any actual crimes he had comitted then they had no right to detain him or turn him back to Canada.

17. Welcome to the world of form not substance!
This is another example of the ridiculous state of our Dept. of Homeland Security (now there's an oxymoron that I could use to explain its meaning to my 8-yr old). I had to explain to her why we couldn't walk to the gate to see off her uncle at the airport anymore, while pointing out that he had to take off his shoes and have every article x-rayed but the cargo was never examined. You gotta love the always on the ball DHS! :sarcasm:

They will save us from A-rabs and music pirates, but white guys with chain saws or fertilizer bombs aren't on their list.

Recruiting numbers are down...

"And I went up there, I said, 'Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill, KILL, KILL.' And I started jumpin up and down yelling, 'KILL, KILL,' and he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down yelling, 'KILL, KILL.' And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me, sent me down the hall, said, 'You're our boy.'"

27. Have you ever seen the Maine border?
It's a joke.

I have no idea what other states (that border Canada) have for security, but I imagine it's not much better than ours, and a couple of terrorists (from 9/11) figured that out quite easily, by coming in through Maine.

I hate to say it, because I love how life is up here, but yes we need more/better border security in Maine.

Another security issue up here: Shutting down the military bases on the coast. Maine has no security at the border with Canada, and then we lose our bases. WTF!

 this is beyond just fucking with the blue states.

51. The 9/11 highjackers didn't cross the border into Maine
They drove up from Massachusetts and then flew back down to Boston.

However, I've crossed the border at Calais many times. In fact, the last time I thought for sure I'd be on some list to get extra scrutiny but we were behind 3 large motorhomes and the guards just waved us through without even a stop.

39. 'Bloody chainsaw' man enters US

A man carrying a home-made sword and what looked like a blood-stained chainsaw was allowed into the US from Canada, the Associated Press reports.

The news agency says Gregory Despres' weapons were confiscated, before US custom officials in Calais, Maine, let him cross the border on 25 April.

The next day he became a murder suspect after bodies of his two neighbours were found in his hometown in Canada.

Mr Despres, 22, was arrested on 27 April and is now awaiting extradition.

Odd as it sounds, he had done nothing wrong before he crossed the border, besides making some really poor choices in barbers.

The 'blood-stained' chainsaw is a bit misleading. From this, it could've been anything on that blade.
