Nominee for US envoy to Baghdad vows outreach to Iraqis (Khalilzad)
WASHINGTON (AFP) - President George W. Bush's nominee to become the next US ambassador to Iraq vowed to ramp up US efforts to win support from the Iraqi people, against a flourishing anti-American insurgency.

"I believe that we need to engage. We need to explain what is at stake, what our vision is for Iraq," said Zalmay Khalilzad, at a nomination hearing by the US Senate's Foreign Relations Committee.

"What we need to do is a better job of explaining our goals -- the goal that an Iraq that is self-reliant and an Iraq that's successful. We want Iraq for the Iraqis and Iraq that works for the Iraqi people," Khalilzad said.

He said the US public relations effort would attempt to redirect Iraqi ire from America and toward insurgents who have stepped up attacks against civilians in recent weeks.

...

"We do not stay where we are not wanted," Khalilad added. "When Iraq can stand on its own feet and the Iraqi government would like us to leave, we will leave."

1. Same old scam.
Massive PR campaign trying to make the people believe the opposite of what they see is really happening with their own eyes.

<snip>

George Bush has named the disease: Islamic fundamentalist terrorism.

But rest easy. He has also named the cure: Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad.

Dr. Khalilzad? Would that be the same Zalmay Khalilzad who oversaw the mobilization, leadership, funding and coordination of, and the media support for, the Islamic fundamentalist terrorists who devastated Afghanistan and Bosnia?

That's the man.

Dr. Khalilzad is in charge of a large part of Asia and the Middle East for the National Security Council. He has *two* field positions: special U.S. envoy to Afghanistan *and* special U.S. envoy to the Iraqi opposition. <1>

Why those two? Afghanistan and Iraq aren't even in the same region. They are separated by 1424 miles, Baghdad to Kabul. <2>

Those miles have a name. It's Iran. Could that be a clue?
