Fieger To Argue For Kevorkian's Release
DETROIT -- Attorney Geoffrey Fieger plans to argue Wednesday that Jack Kevorkian should be resentenced to time served and released from prison.

Fieger will be representing Kevorkian for the first time in five years in a hearing at the Oakland County Circuit Court at 8:30 a.m.

Kevorkian, the 75-year-old assisted suicide proponent, was sentenced to 10 to 25 years after being convicted in 1999 of second-degree murder in the death of Thomas Youk, who suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease. Kevorkian is eligible for parole in 2007.

In a statement released Monday, Fieger said: For almost five years Dr. Kevorkian has been more than punished. He has been pilloried. His continued incarceration is brutal, inhuman and cruel. Dr. Kevorkian has been imprisoned for a crime where there was no victim. To remain silent in the face of this continued injustice would make me complicit."

The attorney persuaded juries on several occasions in the 1990s to acquit Kevorkian of assisted suicide charges.

1. I'm glad to hear this...
I've always supported Kevorkian and his cause. I thought it was a big mistake when he snubbed Fieger at the last hearing. Hopefully he'll be released soon.

2. I haven't thought much of Fieger, but Dr. Jack was and is the victim
of wingnut pricks since his conviction. "Compassionate conservatism" is a true oxymoron. Hardly surprising since contemporary "conservatives" are nothing of the sort. :grr:

3. He should have never been convicted in the first place.
I hope he gets out.

4. just started reading "God Bless you Dr. Kevorkian" by Kurt Vonnegut
seems Kurt had a near death experience when he was having a triple by pass. As with everything Vonnegut has ever written, it is great. I Highly recommend it... I think release of it is limited, and it's not a large book, but I was happy to see Kurt come out in support of the good doctor.

5. I don't believe he should be in jail
But he's not exactly an angel of mercy either. Don't know if any of you remember when he first started his mission, but I was living in Detroit then and read everything I could get my hands on about it. He has some really controversial beliefs. I feel sorry for him, but I cannot support him in good conscience.

He believes that inmates should be forced to accept medical experiments whether they are willing or not, as well as be made available for organ transplants against their will.

He is vehemently anti-abortion and feels that women are made to bear children and that women who don't are not fulfilling they womanly mission.

This all came from an article in the Detroit Metro Times, the local alternative newspaper. I don't have a link to the article and don't know if it's available online since it was published well before the days of easy web access.

6. hmmm... interesting...
I've always followed that case pretty closely, and never heard either of those things. If you ever come across a link, that would be great.

7. Dr. Kevorkian Cares About People Suffering,
people who don't have that much time to live and are begging to have the rights of our pets to end their extreme suffering, fear, humiliation, hopelessness, yet, people like Ashcroft, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Gary Baur, Rev. Moon and their ilk could care less about people's suffering. They only seem to care about the people's money. Bush and his rich pals also like the money made from their suffering, let people suffer, screaming with pain, continue to suffer in order to make the drug companies richer. Their god, or gods, are very cruel and want people to suffer, that is their belief, so let them do what they want, but let the rest of us choose to die is we so want. Their beliefs are pushed on us at our great suffering. I would love to know that I would have a choice, when my time comes, but the only choice we get is their believe system, greed, arrogance, or whatever. Dr. Kevorkian is in prison because of helping people, but those who are cheating people are free, rich, and will do anything for money.
I will have to put my dog to sleep this week and it is with great pain, but I will not keep her alive because of my own selfishness, I want what is best for her, but only after more than one Vet's advice. We love our pets and cry when they die, but even while crying, we have to make a terrible choice. Which is worse, for them to keep suffering or for them to go to sleep without pain? One Vet told me that at least our pets have a choice, unlike us.
To make a decision about a parent, a loved one, will be Hell, but we want what's best for them, for what they want, not some damned dogma that has been pushed down our throats by others who do not know how to be kind, who only know cruelty like the god of Othello.

Dr. Kevorkian has tried to help those in need, who are suffering, now it's time that someone helped him.

I can only say to all those suffering: I wish you well, wish you the freedom to choose and hope that one day "We The People" will be free.

8. So sorry about your dog, Farmboxer
It's heartbreaking to have to lose a pet. I don't think I could handle it. My daughter's three dogs are my godchildren.
