Ethiopians shot dead in protests

At least 22 Ethiopians have been shot dead as police clashed with protesters accusing the ruling party of fraud in last month's elections.

Correspondents say the Black Lion hospital in the capital, Addis Ababa is full of those injured in the clashes, while crowds of relatives weep outside.

Hundreds of students have been arrested this week for defying a protest ban.

Final results have not been announced three weeks after the polls, as reports of massive fraud are investigated.

Arrests follow Ethiopian deaths

Young Ethiopians had gathered for a third day of street protests over alleged election fraud.

Ethiopia has put an opposition leader and his deputy under house arrest hours after clashes in the capital city left 22 dead, an EU observer has reported.

Hailu Shawul heads the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD), which denies organising student protests in Addis Ababa at alleged election fraud.

State radio blamed Wednesday's violence on "gangsters" while a government minister blamed the CUD directly.

The EU's observer urged the government not to harass the opposition.

My, but the fascists are getting bold these days.

IN ADDIS ABABA

AT LEAST 22 people were shot dead in Ethiopia yesterday in a third day of violent clashes between police and demonstrators who accuse the government of fraud in last month's parliamentary elections.

Police opened fire at stone-throwing protesters when they refused to leave the central Mercato and Piazza market area of the capital, Addis Ababa, killing several and wounding many more.

Most of the injured were taken to the city's Black Lion hospital, where crowds of relatives wept outside. There were said to be 11 bodies inside, four of which had bullet wounds in the head, while a further 11 people were reported to have died at other hospitals.

Doctors said they were treating more than 100 people, many with serious injuries. Most of the victims were young men, and dozens had gunshot wounds to the chest, legs, arms and back.

Post-election violence flares in Ethiopia, 22 dead

By Katie Nguyen

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - At least 22 people were killed and more than 100 wounded when Ethiopian security forces fired into crowds Wednesday in a third day of unrest over last month's disputed elections.

Ethiopian authorities said police and troops opened fire on stone-throwing crowds looting shops, robbing banks, attacking police and trying to free detainees in custody.

The government blamed the main opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) for inciting the worst violence seen in Addis Ababa in four years.

State television put the death toll at 22.

Ethiopians seek missing relatives

Relatives are visiting hospitals in Ethiopia's capital seeking news of loved ones after Wednesday's violence in which 22 protesters were killed.

A further four have since died of their wounds, with 10 bodies still to be unidentified, say police.

European Union observer head Ana Gomes condemned the deaths and expressed deep concern at "the dangerous situation Ethiopia was now facing".

Addis Ababa is a ghost town with only a heavy police presence on the streets.
