U.S. Wants Gitmo Prisoners Held at Home
U.S. Wants Gitmo Prisoners Held at Home

By MATT KELLEY
Associated Press Writer

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The United States would rather have detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp imprisoned by their home countries, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday.

Rumsfeld spoke a day after saying he was unaware of anyone in the Bush administration discussing closing the base in Cuba. Hours later, President Bush refused to rule out shutting the facility, saying his administration was "exploring all alternatives" for detaining the prisoners.

Human rights groups and former detainees say prisoners at Guantanamo have been mistreated. The Pentagon said last week that some U.S. personnel there mishandled prisoners' copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy book.

U.S. officials are waiting until Iraqi and Afghan authorities have the ability to deal with dangerous prisoners before handing over detainees from those nations, Rumsfeld said Thursday at a news conference during a NATO defense ministers' meeting.

2. Extraordinary rendition
How is this related to extraordinary rendition? What laws have these detainees broken? More war crimes, but this time outsourced to client states. Genius!

3. so all these many years without a trial--no oversight--all the costs and
planning for the military kangaroo courts, and when the rubber finally meets the road, they just want to dispurse these people to undisclosed locations.

Problem solved?

Rumsfeld plays down idea of closing Guantanamo

--------------------
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Thursday played down the idea of closing the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, saying such a move would raise questions about what would happen to the prisoners.

"A whole lot of questions come to mind. If you closed it, where would you go," he told a news conference at NATO headquarters.

Rumsfeld, asked about Bush's remarks, did not contradict his boss, but said he understood that what "the president said is that we're always looking at ways to improve our operations."

"I know of no one in the U.S. government, in the executive branch, that is considering closing Guantanamo," he told reporters, within hours of Bush's comments being broadcast in the Fox News interview.

5. If I were Turdblossom Rove...
I would tell Rummy he is never to mention Gitmo. Rummy + Gitmo in a headline = international outrage. I would only use anonymice or low-level employees to talk about Gitmo.

11. Hey, let's not be too hasty about closing Gitmo:
it might be a good place to keep a gaggle of war criminals who lied this country into invading Iraq.

Rumsfeld plays down idea of closing Guantanamo
Once again Bush gets his mouth slapped by the people who run the show....

Amid mounting complaints and calls for the facility to be shut down, including a broadside from former president and human rights champion Jimmy Carter, President Bush on Wednesday left open the door to its eventual closing.

14. They don't really care about what bush** says, they just talk over him.
As has been said a million times before, bush** does not run the show. He has about as much authority as I do.

It's either Poppy or Cheney, or both, who are pulling the strings. In fact the other day when Poppy was inflicting the possibility of a Jebthro presidency on us my first thought was 'way to keep power in your cold grasping claws isn't you old zombie rat bastard'.

15. Where would you go? How's about a facility w/n US court jurisdiction?
Well, that's exactly what they were trying to avoid by picking Gitmo.

Fact is, if the Admin. can't keep OUR noses out of what they are doing and who they are doing it too, the admin. would rather let them go than keep them.
