Army Again Denies Cover-Up in Tillman Case

By JOHN J. LUMPKIN
The Associated Press
Thursday, June 9, 2005; 5:08 PM

WASHINGTON -- The Army on Thursday issued a fresh denial that it attempted to cover up the friendly fire death of former pro football player Pat Tillman in Afghanistan.

The Army said procedural mistakes were to blame for its slow acknowledgment of the circumstances of Tillman's death.

Tillman's parents have criticized the Army for waiting weeks to tell them his death was accidental and did not result from enemy fire. They have accused the government of lying to cover up.

A statement from the Army's public affairs office said Tillman's Ranger unit did not quickly tell the Pentagon of the nature of his death because the unit's leaders were waiting until their investigation was finished.

19. "Never thought I would see it here, though."....
How many times have I thought that lately. Growing up, I see we're becoming what we were always told the Soviet Union was: power in the hands of an oligarchy, a secret security state, money going into a military vacuum, controlled media, and now overtly rigged elections...

9. I wouldn't dare give odds on this...
... pissing off the family all over again--that's an even bet. I'm beginning to think that these people are such blatant propagandists because they've completely brainwashed themselves first.

"No one intended to deceive...." I guess that burning all the evidence of a friendly fire killing as the military's first action was just strictly according to regulation, then....

10. Love the phrasing
"INTENDED to decieve!!!" Yeah, it was a complete and total accident...we don't know how it happened, but we never INTENDED to lie to those folks...the fact that they had a big bullshit ceremony planned, and the truth would have RUINED it, had nothing to do with it.

Whadda wanna bet that no famous types will be allowed to serve in the same unit as their sibling anymore? That's what happens when your brother lives to tell the tale...had they both died, it just would have been a very unfortunate coincidence, and I'd be willing to wager that the whole truth would never be told. It is amazing that they kept his brother quiet for as long as they did, frankly.

11. A Stripes reporter told me Tillman's death was due to accidental discharge
and said it a few months ago, adamant that it wasn't "friendly fire."

How come a Stars and Stripes reporter doesn't even have the straight scoop if it wasn't a coverup? Why burn the evidence?

14. Many Stripes reporters, though not all
...are actually military personnel. They grab a brand new E-7 in a journalist rating, give 'em a great job, they go in to a base or a region "undercover" and do not publish under their military rank. In effect, they serve two masters, and some of them are very duplicitous fucks, frankly.

The wheels often come off when it comes time for physical readiness testing. I knew two that got so fat on the damn job that they ran out of time to get back in shape, and were outed. That was back in the old "force shaping" days, when they were tossing people left and right, using any excuse they could, to pare the forces.

S+S is not an independent agency. It is a propaganda arm, make no mistake about that.

12. Non-denial denial
No one intended to deceive, rather than there was no deception. Intentions can rarely be proved. Once more they move the debate to the realm of the metaphysical.

I didn't mean to burn that house down. No one intended to shoot him. We didn't intend to deceive. It may be the truth but it doesn't mean anything except will mollify those who don't think it through.

18. Pat Tillman's Sacrifice
I don't understand the Army's need to deceive anyone in this story. I still think Pat Tillman is a hero. You don't risk "accidental discharge" or "friendly fire" in the NFL. Nothing changes the fact that Tillman walked away from a career where he made a fortune and earned the admiration of the public for playing a game. His story remains one of patriotism and sacrifice. Some public relations idiot couldn't leave well enough alone.

23. Um....
I don't see anyone here questioning Tillman's patriotism or the sacrifice he made. But more to the point, this isn't gilding the lily by "some public relations idiot". This is standard operating procedure by the criminal enterprise that runs this country. Lies, propaganda and fearmongering are their stock in trade. So don't come here trying to fob this off on some loose cannon underling. Just like those few bad apples at Abu Ghraib, huh? Bullshit and you know it. Nice try though.

26. If I recall correctly, quite a few people above the "public relations....
...idiot" arranged for all of the TV time and on-air tributes. That required some folks at the top levels of the Army and the media with big-time signature authority. And don't try to tell me that the NeoCons weren't involved...do you remember the attempt to glorify Jessica Lynch, but she wouldn't cooperate?

And what better way to cover up the shooting down of Flight 93 than to create a plane full of heroes that died while rushing the cockpit.

Don't forget who you're dealing with...they make the Nazi propaganda machine look like a bunch of elementary school kids.

28. Yea, a public relations idiot named RUMSFELD
Please!!!! If it had been learned at the outset that PT was killed by his own unit, that would not have helped the recruiting effort. Without fodder, you cannot run a war. We're seeing that problem getting ready to pop like a pimple with the latest accession numbers--even with a reduced goal, they still aren't cutting it. The PT issue did not help matters, and they strove to keep it tamped down as long as they could. Had not his brother been in the same damn unit, they might have been able to keep it covered up forever.

This was not a PIO/PAO fuckup, this coverup, and it was a coverup, happened at the highest levels of military authority, at the "civilian control of the military" level. This wasn't uniforms making the call, it was SUITS.

51. If well enough had been left alone
"friendly fire" would have been the culprit. The military feared that if the truth had gotten out, it would have reduced Tillman's heroism to a COMPLETE waste. That's why they destroyed the evidence and perpetrated the hoax.
