SCITUATE, Mass. --A member of the Massachusetts National Guard who had been in Afghanistan for less than two months was killed earlier this week during a mortar attack on his base.

Spc. Michael Jason Kelley, 26, of Scituate died Wednesday while unloading a helicopter, his father, Joseph Kelley said.

Kelley was somewhat introverted and quiet, but had a keen wit, a sharp mind and a big heart, his father said. He was an artist and loved to read.
