City Police Open Fire on Federal Law Enforcement Convoy in Northern Mexico
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGB1QB6YV9E.html

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Municipal police in the violence-wracked northern border city of Nuevo Laredo opened fire on a convoy of federal agents sent to bolster security in the area, the Mexican attorney general's office reported Sunday.

One federal agent was severely injured Saturday as more than 40 Nuevo Laredo police intercepted five vehicles carrying members of Mexico's Federal Agency of Investigation.

The convoy apparently had identified itself as carrying federal agents, but local police opened fire anyway, the attorney general's office reported. It is not uncommon for Mexican organized crime groups to pose as federal law enforcement officials.

The shooting came three days after the Nuevo Laredo police chief was gunned down within hours of taking office. Located across the U.S. border from Laredo, Texas, Nuevo Laredo has been caught in a bloody turf battle between Mexico's two main drug gangs.

1. When asked to clarify the earlier statement the attorney general's office
said it had misspoken. What they meant to say was

"It is not uncommon for Mexican organized crime groups to BE federal law enforcement officials."

sarcasm off

2. remember on Fresh Air several years ago...
She had on a writter who secretly went to (I think it was) Nuevo Laredo to witness what all was going on and tape evidence. Massive slave trade of women and girls was one of the things they saw. I can't remember the writter's name or when the show was on, hopefully someone out there can remind me?

3. Tsk. Another example of the free market in action.
These little disputes between enterpreneurs do get out of
hand now and then.

4. I was in El Paso
at a truck stop for the night.
There is an ex truck driver that makes a living taking guys from the truck stop to Juarez and bringing them back after a night (for $10) of...ah...fun and drinking.
I went over and had alot of fun (no working girls for me, though).
The next morning the radio had a news report of a federale that was detained by the city cops for having a weapon in a bar (a BIG NO NO)
The federale's co-workers went down to get him out and a GUN BATTLE broke out.
6 people were killed.
Wild west down Mexico way.
