Washington -- It's a long way from sharing a one-bedroom garage apartment as hard- partying bachelors in Houston to welcoming prime ministers to the Oval Office. But that's what Donald Ensenat and George W. Bush have done ever since the president made his old pal, "Enzo," the nation's chief of protocol.
In the last few weeks, the two have publicly displayed more seriousness than usual as a near-gridlock of foreign visitors has jammed the White House. In short, if it was last Wednesday, it must have been the prime minister of Turkey.
Tuesday brought Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain, Friday brought President Roh Moo Hyun of South Korea, and the Wednesday before last brought President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa. The two weeks before that, there were visits from the prime ministers of Denmark and Greece (same day, separate meetings) and the presidents of Afghanistan, Indonesia and the Palestinian Authority. Today, Bush will meet with the presidents of Botswana, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia and Niger.
