Colombo - Sri Lankan police fired tear gas shells and swung batons on Monday to stop about 5 000 students from reaching the president's house to protest a proposed deal to share tsunami aid with Tamil Tiger rebels. <snip>
The monks and students had joined Kumaratunga's main coalition partner, the Marxist People's Liberation Front, in strongly opposing the deal, saying it threatened the country's sovereignty and helped the Tigers in their quest to carve out a separate state.
The Marxists had threatened to withdrew from Kumaratunga's coalition - which could make the government collapse - if she did not renounce the plan by Wednesday evening. <snip>
The Tigers were demanding a say on how aid got distributed to rebel-controlled Tamil-majority areas after the devastating December 26 tsunami, which killed at least 31 000 people in Sri Lanka. <snip>
