A twin motor propeller machine, designed about seventy years ago. Not too many are left in flying trim. Hopefully the people on board, and on the ground, came out all right, but it is also a shame to lose the old machine.

But the Gooneys, they seem to practically be immortal. Did you read "Fate is the Hunter?"

There was one at the Tampa airport, it was sort of a pet I think. We used to sneak around there at night (those were the days) and pet it. Some of the tail and wing surfaces were actually made of fabric.

Boy, those were the days. A person could sneak around an airport at night and not get shot:)

We used to slither down into this drainage ditch that paralleled the runway and wait for 747's to come through the fog. You could hear them and then the strobes would come on, these incredible blue-white flashes - zot zot zot - all the way down the glide path.

Then, like an enormous ghost, this apparition would roar into the darkness, with cyclones of fog swirling off its wingtips.

It was AWESOME.

My ex's dad was an Air Force test pilot so we had also got to visit MacDill. We'd go to the flight line and watch the F'4s blast into the night skies on full afterburner.

Whoa.

Unfortunately the good Colonel tangled with McNamara. He got exiled to DaNang, where he managed to survive despite MiGs, flak, SAMs, a midair and a crash off the Coral Seas, but was derailed from the General track and ended his career in the Philippines.

Nah - I just write for fun - although, now that you mention it I do write quite a lot, mostly on the 'net and occasionally in a few small arts magazines. Hmmmmm. A future maybe? Mostly I paint (starvation - but you gotta go what you gotta do):)

But, I really love planes and also, seem to get a kick out of the simplest things. Going to the airport in Tampa, it sounds so silly I guess, but I miss being able to do that! The lights, the sounds and colors - it really was amazing.

So were the mosquitos:)

We used to look way, way off in the distance and try to guess the type of plane from the light array. One dawn we watched and watched and WATCHED as what we thought must have been a really gigantic plane approached. And approached. And APPROACHED.

It turned out to be Venus:)

Nothing silly about the simple things..The world would be a much happier place and folks much happier if they did focus on the wonderful simple things we have to enjoy.

I believe most of the worlds troubles are caused by greed and lust for power,as this horrid misadministration is showing. If only we had world leaders who did care about the simple wonders and people of our planet.

Even though I've never flown because of severe fear of height and claustrophobia I too am fascinated by airplanes. I don't know that much about them but I've always so admired the 747s. I've read a lot about them and think they are just so awesome and a marvel.

I better go- I'm listening to my best of Bob Dylan tape and I hear sirens - maybe they have made listening to Bob illegal now- lol

and for all the follow-up with talking heads, psychologists, whatever. A plane crase on Ft. Lauderdale Street, would just cause them headaches particularly if it was a huge crash with people hurt.

FORT LAUDERDALE – An airplane crashed near Executive Airport Monday afternoon.

The plane crashed on the 1700 block of Northeast 56 Street around 3:50 p.m. just after takeoff from Executive, news partner NBC 6 reported.

The twin-engine propeller plane, possibly a cargo aircraft, crashed in a residential area and firefighters were working to bring a fire under control.

Capt. David Erdman, of the Broward County Fire Rescue, said it wasn't clear how many crew members were aboard, if it was carrying passengers or if there were any casualties on the ground.

43. The first DC-3 was flown in 1935...almost 70 years ago. That plane....

...and models derived from the DC-3, like the C-46 and C-47, became famous during WWII for "Flying the Hump". US Army Air Corps crews flew out of India, and later Burma, over the Himalayas into China to deliver much-needed supplies. The planes were unarmed and did not have radar...they had to depend on their skills to avoid fogged-in mountain peaks and Japanese fighter patrols.

21. A DC-3 cargo plane is a LOOOOONG way from what you'll be flying.

It's an antique. Some small operators still use them for cargo, but a DC-3 is no more like a modern airliner (you will probably be in an Airbus or a newer Boeing airplane) than a Model T is like a new Jaguar. Not even apples and oranges; more like apples and ... um, ocelots.

(On edit) And anyhow, this takes care of the accident you were worried about having, so now you can stop worrying. Think of it this way: What are the odds of two plane crashes occurring near the same airport within a week of each other? Slim to none, and Slim just left the building.

4 minutes earlier, I would have been right in the path - yikes. Never heard a plane crash, but it sure didn't sound like I thought it would.

Local news reporting only pilot and co-pilot aboard. Both taken to hospital and some witnesses are saying they both got out of their own accord.

Cannot believe it did not take out a few houses - kudos to the pilot!

I actually thought it might have dropped an engine, but I didn't think it was a whole freaking plane landing/crashing on the road! I guess I was expecting some kind of explosion, which luckily didn't happen.

About 8 helicopters are still buzzing the neighborhood and they blocked off the whole road and evacuated some of the people that live right around it. I am in the neighborhood, but a few blocks away.

Planes leave here for Bimini and the Abacos all the time. And yeah, cargo planes too with building supplies and such. But after reading some of these posts, I am curious to know what is going to come out of that plane. No more local news - all MJ. Might have to take a walk.

I'd fly on a DC-3 any day... Built like a tank!!! There are stories about them coming back with 10 feet of wing shot off...

Like I said eariler, I lived in that area in the late 80's and we called that airport Contra International. My ex-wife worked in the CCF building right at the airport. There was ALL KINDS of strange stuff flying in and out of there all the time.

There were these 2 DC-3's in particular. Both a matte white, with trim stripes and tail numbers. About every two weeks the color of the trim changed and so did the tail numbers. And the tail numbers were painted 'really really small' on the back of the fuselage.

Not trying to imply this accident was fishy, but that airport has quite a history with old 'cargo' planes.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A World War II-era cargo plane crashed and burned Monday in the middle of a residential street, authorities said. All three men aboard survived, and there were no reports of injuries on the ground.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the DC-3 went down shortly after takeoff at 3:48 p.m. near Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. The plane, registered to John W. Andrews of Wichita Falls, Texas, was bound for Marsh Harbor, Bahamas, she said.

Those on board were identified as pilot Charles Riggs, co-pilot Charles Wirt and passenger Hector Espinoza. All three were in fair condition at Holy Cross Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Maria Soldani said.

"They are sitting up talking their cell phones," she said.

42. I saw a DC-3 yesterday.

I always get a thrill when I see a DC-3. They are so distinct, I can identify one with my eyes closed. I flew as a passenger on one in 1967. What good old days those were. It was the day Walt Disney passed away. I was on my way to buy a single engine Bonanza in Oaklahoma. Now I'm getting nostalgic.


Glad the fliers survived. It's almost a fitting end for a plane that old. Died doing what it loved best.

45. About ten years ago I was in Toronto...

and standing at a subway stop in North York and heard the familiar rumble of a vintage airplane. I asked the folks on platform if there was an airport nearby, they said 'yes'. I said it must be a sixty year old airport!

The next day I was walking around downtown and heard the rumble again and there is was flying over the lake, a DC-3 in all its glory.

And a couple of years ago I was visiting a friend in Utica and one flew over all painted up for D-Day to the Rome, NY airshow. Again, I heard it and recognized it before even seeing it.

Last I heard two people got off the plane and are in area hospitals. The plane crashed within a few miles of 3 hospitals. Two of which I have been in. The pilot did an amazing job of landing that plane in the street. It's very close to my roomie's parent's house.

Oh, and to hell with Michael Jackson. And I grew up just a few blocks away from him in good old "bombed out" Gary, Indiana. Think the Jackson 5 played at one of our high school dances way back in the mid 60's.

49. This plane crashed about a half mile from my house...

I had to take a massive detour just to get home because it landed on the street I take home from work.

Just about an hour ago, we went for our usual bike ride and rode down by the crash, as close as you could get. Pretty much what you'd expect.. massive crowds, news cameras, and a big ass plane crashed in the road. It appeared from my vantage point to be, thought I am not 100 percent sure, mostly burned, and apparently missing a left wing.

I have not yet viewed pictures of the crash, but dang.. my first thought was.. "you don't see THAT every day!"..

As we got close to the scene the first part of the plane that begime visible was the tall tail visible over the heads of the crowd and the tops of the emergency vehicles.

Well, I won't be taking 56th to get to work tommorow.
