Turkish troops idea riles Iraqi leaders
http://www.msnbc.com/news/976541.asp?0cv=CB10

Turkey’s parliament voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to allow troops to be sent to Iraq, a move that could lead to the first major contingent of Muslim peacekeepers there. But members of Iraq’s Governing Council said the body had reached consensus to oppose any deployment of Turkish soldiers.

STATEMENTS by members of the U.S.-appointed council in Baghdad reflected the history of tensions between the neighboring nations and many Iraqis’ fears that Turkey aims to grab territory, suppress Kurds or dominate Iraq.

<snip>

Iraq’s 15-member Governing Council met Tuesday to debate the prospect of a Turkish deployment “and after long deliberations we reached consensus on issuing a statement opposing the arrival Turkish troops,” said council member Mahmoud Othman, a Kurd.

But the council delayed issuing the statement — and Othman believed it was because of pressure from the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority.

"We believe any interference from a neighboring country, either north, south, west or east, is unacceptable,” said Mouwafak Al-Rabii, a Shiite council member and longtime human rights activist. “This interference is unacceptable. This interference will jeopardize Iraq and that country.”

1. surely that'll go over well...
since late summer I've read things from both the Kurds & Moqtada Sadr that any Turkish troops supporting the occupation would be fought, that's probably a widespread feeling.. the US occupation leaders would have to be dumb as bricks to invite the unwanted anyway--so of course they will..

4. When I was in Saudi they were still talking about the Turks.
And they did not like them as they seemed to recall the rule. I wonder if all those countries still feel that way? The Turks must have ruled for 100 years but right now I forget my history and dates on that.

5. There will be one advantage to living in the US

When the whole middle east blows up we will have a front row seat to the mass killing as we watch the Capitalist News Network.

That paragon of virtue and wisdom, GW Bush* aka Captain Codpiece, will fuck around until the entire area is in flames. Will someone please tell him to resign!

7. Dubya got more than he bargained for in invading Iraq.
Now he wants Turkey and Pakistan to be his surrogate oppressors of Iraq.

8. What is he thinking?
Let's bring in a country that Iraq has a LONG (and terrible) history with and they can help us occupy it. There is sure to be more trouble in the streets if this goes down. What a joke. Just when I think he can't F up anymore, he goes and does it again.

COULD WE LOOK ANYMORE DESPERATE? CAN THIS ADMINISTRATION DO ANYTHING ELSE TO SHOW THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE!
