PRESIDENT RIDICULED AT INTERFAITH RALLY

By Frank E. Lockwood
HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER

The president of Gold Star Families for Peace, a mother who lost a son in Iraq, criticized the United States' "illegal and unjust war" yesterday during an interfaith rally in Lexington.

<snip>

Sheehan ridiculed Bush for saying that it's "hard work" comforting the widow of a soldier who's been killed in Iraq.

"Hard work is seeing your son's murder on CNN one Sunday evening while you're enjoying the last supper you'll ever truly enjoy again. Hard work is having three military officers come to your house a few hours later to confirm the aforementioned murder of your son, your first-born, your kind and gentle sweet baby. Hard work is burying your child 46 days before his 25th birthday. Hard work is holding your other three children as they lower the body of their big (brother) into the ground. Hard work is not jumping in the grave with him and having the earth cover you both," she said.

<snip>

(My favorite paragraph in the article follows)

"We're watching you very carefully and we're going to do everything in our power to have you impeached for misleading the American people," she said, quoting a letter she sent to the White House. "Beating a political stake in your black heart will be the fulfillment of my life ... ," she said, as the audience of 200 people cheered.

Rest of story

He never goes to funerals and I'd be willing to bet he has yet to personally write a letter to the family of a dead soldier. He just avoids contact with any of the consequences of his arrogance, stupidity and gross incompetence.

I doubt he has even wondered whether he made the right decision. How can you send young men and women off to die -- even in a just war -- and not be haunted by it?

26. Your subject line explains why Bush can sleep at night
He doesn't have a heart. He doesn't have a conscience. He has no moral integrity whatsoever.

It is about time that the parents of these dead soldiers start saying what this mother has said. As much as I grieve for everyone killed, it really grates when the old patriotic excuses are trotted out: "He died for a noble cause." "He wanted to make the sacrifice."

No. These kids have died, are dying, and will continue to die for a lie, as well as for people in power who could give less than a shit about them. It angers me to the bottom of my soul everytime I hear of another death in Iraq.

It's about time the truth be told. This lady did it magnificently. May God be with her and her family.

14. I can't help thinking Casey Sheehan
would be embarrassed at his mother's efforts even as Pat Tillman would be at his parents' high dudgeon.

I really think once soldiers are committed to a war, particularly one as unjust as this one obviously is, they begin to lose their souls. So everything after that becomes an attempt to justify their sacrifices. It's also why 80 percent of them voted to reselect *. They have become one with their insane leader.

I watched this unfold year after year w/r to Vietnam. The following refrain was repeated several million times across this country: "We can't pull out or else the (fill in blank)thousand who have died to date will have died in vain." The number in the blank grew larger and larger with each passing year, of course, to where it eventually reached around 58,000.

So we've got a long way to go yet. The only thing I see shortening this is the lack of a draft. Those who haven't joined still have souls. But once you cross that line and subject yourself to the most effective mind control program the world has ever seen (not even the Nazis had it down like this administration), it is over for you.

Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 12:18 PM by ElectroPrincess
survive in a combat zone (and keep serving) you have to "detach" from what you "feel" and what is traditionally considered "morality."

No, there are many beautiful souls who have done "ugly things" in order to survive. When the truth of all the death and destruction touches these people's souls, they suffer immeasurably. It's called PTSD.

Remember the "1000 yard stare" demeanor of many combat veterans returning *to the world* (USA) during the Vietnam era?

No, those who enjoy killing were always of that sort of nature. The rest of the Soldiers return home and suffer ... emotional pain that neither you nor I can even begin to fathom. No one is ever the same after seeing combat ... some semblance of "the innocent child within" has been robbed from them forever.

On Edit: I do NOT concur with your 80% active duty vote going to *. As I recall it was a 60:40 split *:Kerry. Still, every enlisted member should have voted for Kerry if he/she cared about their best personal/economic best interest.

100. But Gawsh What About...
...all that "brush clearing" he does on his "working" vacations? IT'S HARD WERK!

Why do the Reight-wingers love Bush? It's so simple: he is their ideal. The look in his eyes that says "no one's home." The glazy smirk that says "facts, schmacts--I believe what I want to believe." The openly insincere "damn" he pretends to give about anything or anyone but himself and those he considers useful tools (in other words, his family). The utter divorce from reality. Look at these things and see the same person with which you're wasting your time arguing Left-vs-"Reich" politics with...

I truly believe that Bush--and his administration in general--giggled when he heard what happened to Pat Tillman. They saw a "sucker" who gave up his safety to go fight (he mistakenly believed) for a good cause, and paid a sucker's price.

It's how they view EVERY American citizen outside of their own circles--especially anyone who serves in the military. (Cheney made that abundantly clear with his own Chickenhawk defense.)

I hope I live to see them all pay the price for THEIR sins.

...and I think I just lived long enough to see us turn the corner.

YO, O'REILLY--CHEW HER OUT ON YOUR SHOW. I DARE YOU.

I'm sitting here drinking my morning coffee and I feel like crying--and I'm not a man who cries easily (unfortunately). And I'm VERY angry. I've gotten to the point where it is almost impossible for me to have a 'civil' conversation about what is going on in this country--about Bush and the neofascists. I keep telling everyone, "They aren't going to stop until WE stop them!"

I don't want to live in a world like this. I'm sick of the pain and deception and greed -- it is all SO unnecessary. Mr's Sheehan has it right -- they ARE blood sucking VAMPIRES!

51. So sad. . .
I feel exactly as you do, and being a woman who cries easily isn't helping to get rid of the anger either. The only things that help is knowing that I'm not alone with these feelings and doing EVERYTHING I can to help her drive that stake into their black hearts!

My tears have actually pretty much dried up since the 2000 election theft and I'm doing everything I can to use this buring anger to energize me and fuel my efforts. I agree with you, we have no choice but to stop these thugs and defend our country from their greed and abuses.

Chin up buckaroo!

I've learned a lot here and I've taken this information with me out into my world of friends and family. Hope you find it as useful as I have. Together those of us who care -- and I think there are far more of us than they want us to know -- can push back the darkness that has overtaken our country.

"difficult" and "hard work" it is to "comfort the families that have lost some loved ones" in this mess of a war. The guy goes around dropping that line when he has yet to attend a single funeral of a fallen one.

Given how the vast majority of the relatives of fallen soldiers feel about Bush, no wonder he didn't show up to any funeral.

... for enduring the ultimate grief thrust upon you by a corrupt administration, for finding enough courage in the pain to confront that administration head-on with its lies and corruption, and for the sacrifice it takes to make delivering your powerful and important message a full time, on-the road job.

You are a woman of strength, courage and integrity. Doubtless you taught these values to your son, and America lost one of its finest. You do justice to your son's memory. He would be SO proud of you. You are an inspiration to us all.

So the right-wingers can feel comfortable. If she pointed out some of the more rediculous reasons people still want this war, those same right-wingers would feel uncomfortable as war-nuts.

She is articulate.

I wonder if the SS will visit her to see if she has a "political stake" to make the stupid law add insult to injury.

82. Not to nitpick....
but...

Cindy Sheehan of Vacaville, Calif., accused President Bush of lying to the nation about a war which has consumed tens of billions of dollars and claimed more than 1,700 American lives --

Tens of billions? Try HUNDREDS of billions! And not ONE of those lost lives was worth what we've accomplished, or rather NOT accomplished over there.

I don't blame this woman for being hopping mad. If I were in her shoes I'd do exactly the same thing. bush and his entire administration lied and over 1,700 American soldiers have died because of it. Extrapolate that number for family size and you're talking hundreds of thousands that have lost a loved one for bush's illegal oil grab.

I want Colin Powell to come on TDS again and tell us how everything was on the up and up. To brazenly lie like that is sickening, and I thought he was the only one in the entire administration with a modicum of decency and honor. There is no honor, among thieves or liars. And the bush administration is comprised of nothing BUT thieves and liars. :grr:

83. I agree, Powell is no better than Bush...
As I posted on a different thread last night, I am a Marine mom. My son has been to Iraq and back twice. I also attended a memorial service for one of our local Marines last week. As I gave the new Gold Star mother a hug, all I could feel was gratitude that my son made it through two deployments but such terrible guilt that her son did not come back but mine did. What a tremendous loss, and now we have over 1700 of the fallen.

I can never forgive Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell, etc. for what they have done to our country and to all the families that will never be the same. I am grateful for Ms. Sheehan that she has the strength to speak out. I was asked once by one of my co-workers who knew I was against Bush and the war, how could I not support the war, especially if my son was to be killed? I told her I am proud of my son, the Marine, but yes he will have died in vain. Afghanistan was one thing, Iraq was wrong. How many more will have to die because American pride will not allow us to admit that we made a mistake. By the way, this mother, a staunch Republican, said she would take her sons to Canada first. It was all I could do to swallow my anger. The anti-war Democrat's son goes to war and the pro-war Republican's kids stay safely home. How ironic but so typical.

People need to speak out. I proudly display a bumper sticker that reads "Another military family against Bush" right below "My son is a United State Marine".

114. It's apparently clear...
that Powell and his family has been somehow threatened not to speak the truth on this matter. We heard from somebody (forget who) that if Deep Throat was found out in the early 70's, he would have been murdered by a Republican operative. I'm convinced the Republican Party has some kind of criminal organization embedded within it to force people to tow the line, esp. on matters like this. It's the only imaginable way how so many of the Bush lackeys are holding together on what the rest of us know to be The Big Lie.
