Hunter says menus from Guantanamo a proof of good care

COPLEY NEWS SERVICE

June 14, 2005

WASHINGTON – House Armed Services Committee Chairman Duncan Hunter is using menus to defend U.S. conduct at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility.

In a TV interview show Sunday and a Capitol news conference Monday, Hunter, R-El Cajon, brandished the menus for the Guantanamo detainees' meals as a partial rebuttal to allegations that suspected terrorists and anti-U.S. fighters there were being mistreated.

For nearly every question that reporters asked about aggressive interrogations and lack of judicial process involving the 500-plus detainees, Hunter's answers were "honey glazed chicken" or "lemon baked fish," served with whole-wheat pita, various vegetables and fruit.

(snip)

Hunter repeatedly noted that the men at Guantanamo have killed or tried to kill "thousands of Americans," and include "Osama bin Ladin's bodyguards" and "the 20th hijacker," Mohamed al-Qahtani, and yet "they are treated exceptionally well."

I mean come one TV AND food why that is how those high living death row convicts live ON YOUR DIME!!!!

Another part of this I have heard on talk radio is the fact that "WE GAVE THEM NEW KORANS!!! Probably the only new ones they've ever had!!"

This seems to have tested well in the focus groups. :eyes:

39. It's probably one of these...
I think this one you can get at Costco in bulk with other similar meals for cheap. Stouffers probably has excess inventory of these and has cut a deal to unload a lot of them at Guantanamo!

Stouffers also has another glazed chicken with rice pilaf meal too...

Throw some local fruit in from Cuba there and you have the dish he's describing!

Garbage by any other name. Savory herbed potatoes, tasty this, spicy that. They have a long list of adjectives to append to the menu items which doesn't do a thing for the slop so named.

18. Son of a #####! He sold me! What must I have been thinking?
What on earth would have caused ANY of us to doubt the decent, enlightened behavior of the Bush administration.

Duncan Hunter is a god. I bless him for showing us how wildly wrong we were. All it took was that public statement from Hunter about the great chow they get, his reading from his little piece of paper, just like Randi Rhodes said, to prove everything we know to the contrary is actually wrong!

— I know it's in Texas, probably in
Tennessee — that says, fool me once,
shame on — shame on you. Fool me —
you can't get fooled again."

28. I hope the detainees don't forget to tip their waitresses
Hunter doesn't make it clear that if they have a choice of entrees, or if the menus are simply posted in the common area. And do they have to stay in their cells while they eat, or is it served on the promenade deck?

The writers at The Daily Show must be drooling like Niagra Falls.

29. Was just listening to Rush Limbaugh talk about Hunter's comments
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 12:02 PM by Roland99
Rush is just AMAZED, AMAZED I tell you that ANYONE could think we were treating prisoners in Gitmo with nothing but the utmost in respect.

I mean, having a WOMAN interrogator stradle a guy so he'd rather commit suicide? Are we supposed to keep women out of the prison because "they aren't humans to these people"?

This is the 2nd day Rush has focused solely on this event (Hunter serving the media the food served in Gitmo).

Only the insane and the completely and utterly ignorant could listen to Rush and think he was talking about not only the most important news items of the day, but also telling the truth about them.

Oh, and Rush kept repeating the clip of Hunter saying bin Laden's bodyguards were being detained. Hmm...maybe one or two out of HOW MANY?!?!

30. Just a matter of time before followers of Zarqawi take a hostage...
and make a new video showing that person being given orange glazed chicken and rice pilaf, complete with a fancy menu in front of them, and then proceed to hack that person's head off before he's done swallowing it.

They will then say "Hey George Bush and Duncan Hunter. We're humane to our prisoners too!"

I wonder what Duncan Hunter will say to that! I guarantee that we down here in San Diego would take a discreet and non-horrific frame grab of that video to remind voters down here in San Diego why this congress critter must go in 2006 and help retake a 67% majority in the House!

"And the idea that somehow we are torturing people in Guantanamo is absolutely not true, unless you consider having to eat chicken three times a week is torture," Hunter said at the news conference.

Although, he's probably too "chicken" to bet his seat on it.

33. Hmm....... and is this food served fresh?
Let's not forget how the food was served at Abu Ghraib.

“Contract Meals Disaster" for Iraqi Prisoners

by David Phinney, Special to CorpWatch
December 9th, 2004

Rotten food crawling with bugs, traces of rats and dirt. Rancid meats and spoiled food resulting in diarrhea and food poisoning.

This is what detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad were regularly given to eat by a private contractor in late 2003 and early 2004, causing anger to swell to a furious boil between the U.S. military guards and the prisoners.

Foul as the food was, there never was enough. The private contractor, run by an American civilian who was subsequently killed, routinely fell short by hundreds of meals for Abu Ghraib's surging prison population. When the food did arrive, there were often late and frequently contaminated.

So went another sad chapter in the story of the Abu Ghraib prison, where U.S. military personnel and private contractors would make headlines and ignite international outrage over allegations of torture psychological abuse in May of this year.
