Rumsfeld points to image problem

Rumsfeld said America remained the world's top destination
US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has told the BBC his country needs to do a "better job" at communicating its policies to the rest of the world.
"I think the US is notably unskilful in our communications and our public diplomacy," he said in Washington.

He made a robust defence of the US role in Iraq, saying it was now up to the Iraqi people to restore order.
On Guantanamo Bay, he said the prison's reputation was "unfortunate" but its existence was necessary for security.

....

People always set out to "bring down or tweak" the world's most powerful states, he continued, citing coverage of the US on foreign media such as Arab TV channel al-Jazeera.

"You just can't hear day after day after day after day things like that that often aren't true, with a lack of balance, and not come away thinking, gee, that must not be a very good country," said Mr Rumsfeld.

1. It's not just your communication that's unskillful, dumbass...
It's the dishonesty of your communication, and the fact that your agenda is harmful to many other countries. They know that, and they know that you'll never be honest with them.

2. Communicating via 5.56 mm bullets= ineffective
Put that one in the DOD "don't" column. A strange thing about munitions Rummy (we know you've never actually employed any personally, so we'll gratuitously throw this in), they are universally considered a sign of ill will.

9. Rummy thinks everyone outside US is stupid
US has an image problem not because of its unskilful communication but because of its acting like a bully since year 2000.

I don't recall that US had an image problem during the Clinton era.

10. Gee, one could conclude the US has magnificently communicated its policies
to the rest of the world for nothing is ambiguous.

13. If by "communicating," Rummy, you
mean bombing the shit out of countries for fun and profit, you and the rest of the BFEE are highly skilled.

As for diplomacy, public or otherwise, you've never tried it, so how would you know?

14. Was he talking about himself? Or Cheney's press conference?
Once again, the admin rings the bell on the irony meter.

""You just can't hear day after day after day after day things like that that often aren't true, with a lack of balance, and not come away thinking, gee, that must not be a very good country," said Mr Rumsfeld."

16. Donald, I disagree.
The US has been very skillful at communicating its policies. You and the Pentagon have gone to great lengths to make everyone understand the New Order.

You just don't like the fallout from them.

You don't like the fact that the US leads the world in hatred and bad reputation, and as someone wrote here a while ago, "Thanks. You just put a bulls-eye on my back".

17. Here's a thought, Rummy
Maybe it's the policy people are pissed off at, and not the "communicating" of the policy that is inadequate? Or do you think people would like having cluster bombs rained on them if only Karen Hughes could communicate to them that their children had to die for freedom, capitalism and the murkan way?
