One Mexican in every 11 emigrates to U.S.

Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - One in every 11 people born in Mexico and still alive is a U.S. resident, and about half of these immigrants crossed the border illegally, according to a comprehensive report released Tuesday.

In the Pew Hispanic Center study of immigration trends, analysts estimated that in March 2004 about 10.3 million immigrants from around the world were living in the United States without legal documents to be here -- some 24 percent of them in California. About 10.6 million people born in Mexico live in the U.S. -- about 5.9 million of them illegally.

"We have a dilemma. We love the benefits of low-cost labor -- the nannies, the cooks. On the other hand, we don't want all the pressure. We complain when they go to the emergency room," said David Hayes-Bautista, director of the center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the University of California, Los Angeles. "Something has got to give." An immigration wave this massive -- with about one-third of all immigrants coming from Mexico -- has not been seen since in the United States since the late 19th century, when Germans and Irish poured in.

Working menial jobs and lacking health insurance, illegal immigrants take advantage of the public-health system. The county's cost of providing medical care for illegal immigrants has soared from $340 million in 2003 to $392 million currently, officials said. The growing pressure on the county's health budget comes as the public and private hospital system is increasingly in danger of collapse. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Services faces a $435 million deficit by July 2006 and more than $2.5 billion by 2008.

This simplistic 'attack' on Mexians is starting to really annoy me.

The simple facts are these:

1. they come here because republicans love to hire them cheaply
2. their low wages create a 'need' for US citizen wages to be held down
3. our government has no interest in tying our aid to Mexico to real improvement to lives of Mexicans THERE..

business-owning GOP types want them coming over the border but then use prejudice to keep their wages low, benefits non-existant and use their illegal status to deny claims if they are injured on the job.

4. Say what?

That does not compute. The whole point of NAFTA was to shift the manufacturing to a low-wage, low-regulation locale. The environmentalists and labor rights groups failed to incorporate any protections into NAFTA.

What bit Mexico in the butt was that right as NAFTA was put into place, China and other countries in Asia came online in the global economy and they make the maquiladoras look like union shops in comparison.

5. You're kidding, right?

The whole point of this trade is to exploit cheap Mexican labor. Of course Mexican workers seeking better wages will come to the U.S., the same as U.S. capitalists seeking cheaper labor "export" capital to Mexico. It all makes perfect economic sense. Factors of production will migrate when possible to seek higher returns.

7. I agree with you and Wrightman Pat that NAFTA is a huge problem

in this equation, except that WP above places the blame on the wrong parties..environmentalists and unions had nothing to do with Chapter 11 which is the real culprit.

That said, there IS an opportunity to create pressure via UNDERSCORING that that is why they are coming here even though trade is INCREASED.

It simply needs to be framed to counter the more racist attacks on immigration.

9. I believe this estimate is far too low.

Back in 2001, when Dimson was fellating Coca Cola Fox, a member of Fox's cabinet responsible for Mexican ex-patriot affairs was interviewed several times. It was generally acknowledged at that time that 1/6th of Mexican citizens lived, legally or illegally, in the U.S.

Until those who exploit such chaotic economic migration are heavily penalized, including prison terms, it will only serve to worsen the impoverishment of the impoverished.

The standard of living for the "Haves" in Mexico is second only to France.. and 20 Migrants do take jobs.. and that is not counting the 10.6 million lost thru NAFTA..

the time I have spent in mexico speaking with the locals on the western coast and southern area I ask them about immigration to america and most that I spoke to do NOT want to leave their beautiful country. These of course are the people making good wages off of tourism...so yes, pushing the poverty stricken people up here. good god! like we need that with so many current legal americans struggling. WTF!
