Dems cheer House poll -The Hill
Recent Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) polling shows that seven Republican members would be easily defeated if their reelection took place today, the committee’s chairman told House Democrats yesterday at a closed-door meeting.

While Rep. Rahm Emanuel (Ill.) did not name the members, who are from districts “around the country,” he said all polled at 43 percent or less when voters were asked if they would vote today to reelect their congressional representative, sources at the meeting told The Hill.

Emanuel said three of the Republicans polled below 40 percent, including one, from a Western state, at 32 percent and another, a Californian, at 34 percent. The DCCC has targeted three California members: Reps. David Dreier, Richard Pombo and Randy “Duke” Cunningham.

The numbers created a palpable buzz in the room, said one attendee, as the assembled Democrats mulled the prospect of unseating a handful of vulnerable Republicans. Democrats have seized on recent nationwide polls showing high disapproval ratings for Congress and the president.

3. I hate to sound ignorant here, but here goes...
how many seats do we have to take, to have control of the House (and also the Senate, while I'm asking)? Would these potential 7, be enough to do that?

8. 20 something in the House, 6 or 7 in the senate
We'd basically have to win more than half the competitive races in 06, which will be very hard to do before rediscticting takes place in 2012.

11. 218 seats needed to control -They have 227
(or maybe 3 more than that- I don't remember how the run-offs ended)

snip>
With three races unsettled in the 435-member House, Republicans held 231 seats to 200 for the Democrats and one Democratic-aligned independent. They hold 227 seats in the current Congress, with two seats vacant.

A minimum of 218 seats are needed for House control.

4. That was probably the case the FIRST time they voted in these elections.

Gotta get the voting machines tossed out. They can run polls till the cows come home and it won't make a bit of difference if the votes aren't counted fairly.

13. Probably be higher without Dean shooting from the lip
When the 2 top prospects to be the first black president and the top prospect to be the first Hispanic president have to distance themselves from the Chairman of the party, that's a problem.

15. It shows that they are WIMPS and Hyprocrites.
Why didn't they attack Minority Whip Dick Durbin for comparing Gitmo to Nazi Concentration camps? That could hurt the DSCC's AIPAC donations

19. They didn't have to distance themselves from Dean
They chose to, in an attempt at character assasination. Fuck Harold Ford and Bill Richardson for being such mealy-mouthed milqutoast sellouts.

10. And the people aren't electing repubs anymore, the machines are.
I doubt if * is going to let the Democrats take back the house without a very big fight. The house writes up the articles of impeachment

12. In CA, only Dreier can be defeated.
He is gay, which is a knock against him with his fascist base. He is "pro-illegal immigration" which is another. And his area is trending Democratic. Pombo I would like to see go, but until the Stockton area Latinos really participate on a level comparable to whites, this probably isn't possible.

16. Then There's Diebold. Democratic Candidates Think THEY'LL Win
cause THEY'RE much better than the last Democratic candidate who lost.

IMO, this is a big part of why too many Dems still don't seem to realise the import of electronic voting.
