Richland County Democrats held the nation’s first straw poll for the 2008 presidential race Wednesday and the surprise winner was U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York.

“We’re simply delighted,” said Bob Kunst, president of Hillarynow.com, who is traveling the country promoting Clinton’s candidacy.

“This should help us in our effort. It gives us a nice boost.”

Clinton’s victory at the sparesely attended event was a mild upset. Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, a native South Carolinian and last year’s Democratic vice presidential candidate, had been considered the favorite.

Clinton got 44 votes to 34 for Edwards. Virginia Gov. John Warner came in third with 32 votes and U.S. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware got 24 votes.

Everyone else scored in the single digits.

how Hillary would do against Republican candidate in the South.

4. It's probably not safe to project these numbers on the whole South

This was a straw poll in a single county, and that county is the heaviest Dem county in S.C.

And it's hard to tell what percentage of the vote HRC got, since the total number of votes is not given. If you just add the votes listed, you get 134 and 44 is 32.8% of that. But it said "others were in single digits", which means that there were at least two others in the poll. Depending on how many "others" there were in single digits - - and with Dems, that could be a boatload - - HRC got somewhere between 33% and 30% of this straw poll.

Since she is polling around 30% nationally among Dems, her showing here is really not surprising. I would agree with the article that the mildly surprising result is that Edwards came in second, emphasizing the "mildly" part of that statement.

8. Especially where politics is concerned...

I've learned to rarely assume anything. What appears to be real and true sadly may be an illusion - whether a flat out lie or something changed to make it work for whomever is in power.

I appreciate your letting me know that was done in a mostly Dem county That's an interesting tid bit although I would have thought Edwards would have beaten her since he seems so well liked by so many folks.

2. I think Edwards is finished...

Maybe he could survive as DNC chair when Dean is done with it or move on to run for Governor, but I don't think he has a future in national politics. If Hillary carries NC over Edwards (whatever the heck a "straw poll is), I don't see much of a place for him.

Hillary/Warner sounds like an interesting combo.

5. Political fortunes ebb and flow

There were times when FDR, Churchill and Nixon seemed to have been long past political relevance, and then times changed, and they became world leaders. It's too early to say that his career is over.

IMSHO, Edwards made a mistake agreeing to be Kerry's VP candidate - - it destroyed his image as the unstoppable rising star. However, he was going to lose his re-election bid, so he was going to lose that anyway.

He's young and has some charisma. I don't think he'll be a viable candidate in 2008, but maybe he'll make a comeback someday.

7. I agree with you that

accepting the VP slot destroyed his image as the unstoppable rising star. I think that is why some people were pushing so hard for Edwards to be the VP pick.
