WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 — Senator Don Nickles, the Oklahoma Republican and chairman of the Budget Committee, announced on Tuesday that he would retire next year instead of seeking a fifth term. The decision opens opportunities for Democrats to claim his seat.
"I've always said I didn't want to do this for life," Mr. Nickles said in a telephone interview after announcing his decision at a news conference in Oklahoma City. "I came from the private sector. I always said I was going to return to it, and frankly, I'm shocked that I'm completing four terms."
At 54, Mr. Nickles has been in the Senate for 23 years, and though he had been hinting at retirement for months he said he did not make up his mind until Saturday. Speculation on Capitol Hill had been that he would ease into a career as a lobbyist, although he insisted he did not know precisely what he would do.
"I don't have a clue," he said. (snip/...)
