Funny thing happened to Texas investor Jeffrey A. Marcus on the way to his ambassadorship in Brussels. Marcus, like President Bush a former part owner of the Texas Rangers, had smooth sailing through the Senate, which confirmed him on Aug. 1. He was sworn in, apparently in Texas, on Sept. 22, and a reception was planned last week at the White House.
Invitations had been sent out, we're told, and guests were making their way to Washington, when word came to forget about it. Marcus resigned just four days after being sworn in.
So what happened? Well, it seems his wife, Nancy Marcus, who had been a delegate to the United Nations, filed for divorce in Dallas on Sept. 19, according to the Dallas Morning News, citing those "irreconcilable differences" after 29 years of marriage.
"I deeply regret that I will not be able to serve as ambassador," Marcus said in announcing his resignation. "Family comes first," he said, and personal matters required him to stay in Dallas.
