Arroyo: 'They are going too far'

Slams 'irresponsible detractors'

First posted 00:06am (Mla time) June 17, 2005
By Christine O. Avendaño, Nikko Dizon
Inquirer News Service

Ms Arroyo, in the center of a firestorm sparked by allegations of cheating in the last election and charges that her family was involved in illegal gambling payoffs, said she had "faith in God" that "the Filipino will hold on their undying faith and the future of this country and in our democratic way of life."

<snip>

Obviously referring to the raging controversies hounding her and her family, Ms Arroyo said her detractors were taking advantage of her unpopularity that arose in the first place when she made the tough decisions, like pushing for new taxes to fund her economic reforms.

A background story about the Arroyo scandal, that also includes stealing an election:

PHILIPPINES;Philippines bribes

Philippines lawmakers will begin an inquiry this week into allegations that President Gloria Arroyo's family members have received bribes from syndicates running an illegal lottery.

SABAPATHY: At the centre of the controversy is president Gloria Arroyo's husband, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo and their son Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel Arroyo. Their alleged crime, being beneficiaries of jueteng protection money.

Jueteng an illegal numbers game or lottery is hugely popular among the middlle and poor class of Filipinos ... and over the years syndicate bosses have been paying more to officials in higher places to buy their protection.

2. First off, President Gloria walked out of Bush's war
And none of the accusations from the opposition are being taken very seriously here.

I had no idea the Philipines walked out of the joint operations against the rebels. You just don't hear that much in the US news.

6. Estrada and the former candidate Poe are aligned with the Marcos’s
but Estrada is in jail and politically dead, and Poe is just dead.

9. She didn't walk out of Bush's war, the Congress rebelled against her plans
The Congress even vetoed Arroyo's plans to allow US combat troops on Filipino soil to fight "terrorists."

11. Bush's war is global in scope
Under the guise of fighting "terror" and/or "drugs", American military personnel have been introduced in several countries across the globe to prop up unpopular dictators and oligarchies in order to preserve American hegemony.

Iraq just happens to be center stage.

13. Slight emphasis on the second syllable
still sounds like "wetting the grass"
