Davis Concedes, Urges Supporters to Put Chaos of Recall Behind Them
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 01:03 AM by demdave
Says Davis gave him a call and said he will work with him.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - In the same hotel where he celebrated his first election five years earlier, Gov. Gray Davis stood before a crowd of supporters late Tuesday and acknowledged defeat in only the second successful recall of a sitting governor.
"Tonight, the voters decided it's time for someone else to serve," Davis said, his words interrupted by supporters booing at his concession and chanting "We want Gray" in support.

Davis smiled, and as the chanting subsided, continued, saying of the state's voters, "I accept their judgment."

1. I tried too look it up on Google...
...I searched for "acceptance speech generator", but Ahnuld must have used some commercial software. You know, enter your name, your office, your state, your opponents name, click on "generate".... And voila! "I will work with everybody, poor, rich, every color. This will be a great state again in the Greatest Country in the World (TM). I will get you jobs, more businesess, education. I thank my wife and my in-laws."

I can't believe this ape.

14. California isn't as liberal as people would like to think...
It's easy to focus on San Francisco and Hollywood, and jump to conclusions, but for every such place, there are places like Orange County, the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, San Diego, and the entire Central Valley, that are quite conservative. Although Democrats tend to dominate their state legislative and congressional races, the latter includes people like Tom Lantos and former congressman Gary Condit, neither of whom would be considered left-of-center.

As I have pointed out earlier, the last four governors have been Ronald Reagan (R - 2 terms), Jerry Brown (D - 2 terms), George Deukmajian (R - 2 terms), Pete Wilson (R - 2 terms), and Gray Davis (D - 1 term+). That isn't exactly a monolithic Democratic hold on the Governor's Mansion. In fact, it works out to 5 years in Democratic hands out of the last 21, and 13 out of the last 37.

Both U.S. senators are Democrats, true, but they generally win by very small margins. If another high-profile Republican movie or TV star (I've heard both Kelsey Grammar and Dennis Miller being touted :puke: ) were to run for either of their seats, I would guess the incumbents would be in some trouble.

For that matter, it has only been in the last four presidential elections that California has gone Democratic, and two of those were for Clinton. Before that, it was pretty predictably Republican.

So, I think the notion of California as being some sort of hotbed of liberal Democratic thought is somewhat off-base. Rather, I see it as more of a swing state, when all its elections are taken together.

18. Also, much of California is white working class/poor
and for some reason that I find hard to understand, the white working class will vote against their class interest and vote Repuke. They are scared of "them" and as long as the pukes speak the language of us (white) versus them (brown/yellow/queer etc) then they will secure the white working class vote. I think the same holds nationally as well.

Not everyone in California lives in a gated community near the beach. Look at the small towns away from San Francisco and LA. People are struggling on very little.

16. The " Big Dog" drops yet another one.
What other election result COULD there have been. A governor who BEGINS the race with approval in the 20s has to do better then to try and demonize one of the best liked men in the world. That never happened though, all they could do was try and change the subject from Davis. That's the strategy of a loser, as we now finally see.

We are told Clinton advised Davis to make this an attack campaign, and the only thing I recall hearing Davis say from there on was references to right wing comspiracies to steal the election. Is there nobody in the party leadership who actually listens to the PEOPLE ?

With three quarters of the electorate turned off by Davis, either a clear reason to vote FOR Davis was needed, or a palatable alternative to Davis should have been offered. Good candidates were available but as the party refused to even consider the possibility it became poliitcal suicide for them to come forward.

California was lost through arrogance and stupidity. It was a self inflicted wound. And the same people are positioning the party for the 04 presidential election.

22. Clark, and Dean don't seem to be following the DLC/ DNC
game plan so those "same" people aren't running the show if those two candidates win the nomination.

23. If Davis had used some material from his Concession Speech
in his ads, he may have done better. To quote one commentator, it was "a class act," where he claimed some of his successes. The Davis I saw in this speech was classy, and electable. Unfortunately, the presentation of this persona came too late.

Your posts vary very little. It's all Clinton's fault. Yep that's the ticket. Be smug because you will reap what you sow.

27. Machiavelli had the answer
There is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new system.

For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old system and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new one.

– Machiavelli – 1513

4. Davis may
be talking out of his head to stay in politics to be seen as a graceful looser but let' face it he is gone probably for good. The Repugs are the only ones who bring criminals and loosers back around.

I got my "Davis concedes" thread locked for not being LBN. Go figure.

I guess the mods didn't see the relevance.

6. Did he mention the car "tax"?
This whole thing is about the fucking car "tax". Too bad for him that he won't be able to get rid of it. The common man will come to hate this fucker too, since they can't afford to pay this "tax". Imagine registration on a couple of late model Suburbans on top of mortgage payments on a 700k McMansion.

This state, like this whole country is a sinking ship. The only "good" part about this will be seeing this shithead suffer this out.

12. They can't get rid out it, AS just hasn't admitted it yet.
The treasurer said today that without it the state goes in the red an extra 4 Billion. Unemployment is so bad here that they can't get it from income taxes. That leaves only prop 13.

It will be a SUPREME pleasure to see AS explain in broken english why he can't do anything about the car "tax" and has to change prop 13!

11. one last time
The 'car tax' otherwise known as registration fees...the 'tripling' was built N2 the legislation signed by PETE WILSON! The registration fees U pay R a major source of income 4 your county & city. When your county's revenues fall below a fixed percentage the 'tripling' kicks in. The fees do not go 2 the state - Gray Davis had nothing 2 do w/ this legislation. So if your city and/or county R short of funds, they R hoping 2 make up some of the shortfall w/ the registration fees.

15. sweetie all you voted for was
the Terminator and Total Recall. That's what you want as governor -- a big violent strong man -- you didn't vote for a platform other than getting rid of Davis. Only this weekend did a few panels get together and detail the right wing platform for Arnold. No one has really told you what Arnold is all about and no one had a real debate on the issues. You've been snookered. Watch and see. You'll see more cuts in education; layoffs of state employees and no improvement in the economy.
