Sen. Clinton calls for creation of Gitmo commission
By DOUGLAS TURNER
News Washington Bureau Chief
6/17/2005

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday called on President Bush to create an independent commission to investigate allegations of prisoner abuse at the Defense Department's detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
"I would very strongly urge that we appoint an independent commission and that commission quickly look into all of these allegations and come up with recommendations," Clinton, D-N.Y., said on NBC's "Today" show.

"I really hope that the president would consider doing this, because every day that goes by, it really undermines our capacity to go to the rest of the world and talk about what's important about America," Clinton, said in an interview with co-host Matt Lauer.

1. doesn't this simply legitimize Gitmo...?
Edited on Fri Jun-17-05 10:18 AM by mike_c
It seems to me that Congressional leaders should be calling for a return to fundamental principles of constitutional justice, e.g. access to counsel, due process, speedy trial, etc., rather than conducting investigtions into the treatment of prisoners under those conditions. Under the best possible outcomes those investigations could produce reforms-- but only in the day-to-day treatment of people who probably shouldn't be held at all, and certainly not "in perpetuity" without charge or due process. In doing so, doesn't the investigation tacitly acknowledge the legitimacy of concentration camps such as Gitmo?

4. you have a point
at least she is speaking up.

However, the criticism is also valid. We don't need a commission to study gitmo, we need to stop committing war crimes. How about calling for the immediate inclusion of all present and future detainees into our constitutional criminal justice system with all the standard rights that this entails?

5. And your point is?
We are under no obligation to cheer on Hillary, especially when she's as wrong as she has been on the "war on terror" and the war in Iraq.

What Clinton should be doing is condemning torture--loudly and clearly--not splitting hairs by calling for useless, fungible commissions.

Plainly, we're looking for her to start acting like a leader. She has a lot to answer for in this war, and she's failing the test spectacularly. I won't even dream of voting for her until she improves.
