Hewlett-Packard Cuts 200 In Houston (Layoff Update)
"Hewlett-Packard Co. of Palo Alto, Calif., cut 200 jobs at its campus in Houston on Monday, weeks after reporting disappointing third-quarter results.

The cuts were made in H-P's enterprise-systems group, an unprofitable division that includes storage devices, servers and software.

Hewlett-Packard, which merged with Compaq Computer Corp. last year, had said it would slash 1,300 positions after missing Wall Street expectations for sales and earnings in the quarter. Those were in addition to 3,500 layoffs the company previously announced.

BASF AG of Ludwigshafen, Germany, the world's biggest chemical maker, may reduce costs further after cutting more than 1,000 jobs in the United States, its chief executive, Juergen Hambrecht, said Tuesday. "I don't want to talk about the details as we haven't talked with employees, but you will see more to come," Hambrecht said at BASF's investor day."

2. while guv "terminator" is new...
being "terminated" for the many unemployed in this country is NOT new. I can't remember a week going by in the past three years that at least one decent sized company has not had a layoff. But the tv media seems to brush off those unemployment numbers and emphasize profit for the greedy giants of business.

4. More Bush --um-- Prosperity
another 200 individuals introduced to George UU Bush-style "propsperity."

I drive to Houston every now and then, and remember passing COMPAQ office buildings. I'm wondering how many of the recently pink-slipped COMPAQ employees live in Tom DeLay's district.

5. Thanks Carly Fiorina!
I'm sure that you've taken a cut in salary to help keep HP morale out of the dumpster, right?
