CIA seen struggling to find post-Sept. 11 role
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The CIA, the powerhouse of American Cold War espionage, is struggling to find its role in the war on terror as post-Sept. 11 reforms take hold across a sprawling U.S. intelligence community.

Two months after John Negroponte took up his new position as President Bush's overall intelligence chief, a duty previously held by the CIA director, experts say the agency's status as the central clearinghouse for intelligence on key issues, including counterterrorism, is eroding.

"There's a sense that the CIA is deeply embattled," said U.S. appellate judge Richard Posner, author of the book, "Preventing Surprise Attacks: Intelligence Reform in the Wake of 9/11."

Efforts to reform the 15-agency espionage community after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and the errors over Iraq's weapons capabilities, have undercut the CIA's status on several fronts, experts say.

2. Let's out-source the CIA to India. I bet it would be a lot cheaper.
And I'll bet it would work just as well too.

4. I think you're forgetting that the CIA originally told the truth about....
...WMDs not being in Iraq, and that the CIA has been made the fall-guy by the NeoCons for 911. I also believe that Tenet was removed as CIA Director because he refused to go along with what the NeoCons wanted. I also believe that the "slam dunk" quote used by Woodward to describe Tenet's alleged discussion with Herr Busch on allegedly finding WMDs in Iraq was a complete fabrication.

IMHO, the CIA is being systematically destroyed by the NeoCons because that is the only agency remaining that can cause major problems for the NeoCons.

I'm also beginning to suspect that the CIA has been involved in the release in the UK media of the Downing Street Memo and the six supporting documents.

6. No, I'm not forgetting anything.
I oppose the America Corporate Empire and national security state in general, and the CIA is a central and egregiously offensive part of it. The fact that they were on the side of the angels in the matter of the stupid and illegal war in Iraq does not change that at all.

3. Still Trying to Blame the CIA for Boosh**'s LIES
errors over Iraq's weapons capabilities

The CIA had it exactly RIGHT! Saddam was no threat.
But that wasn't the answer that Boosh** wanted.
"The intelligence was being fixed around the policy".
The CIA refused to play along, and has been getting punished for that.
The OSP was formed to produce the fake "intelligence" that would be
presented to the world to "justify" the war.

8. Efforts to have the Pentagon coordinate intel with the CIA were just nixed
Pentagon Escapes Greater CIA Supervision

Chalk up a win for the spying authority of the Pentagon and the Beltway's bureaucratic heavyweight, Donald Rumsfeld. House intelligence committee chairman Peter Hoekstra tells TIME he's dropping legislation that would have more formally enshrined in law the tradition that the CIA coordinates human spy operations outside the U.S. The provision—Section 401 of the intelligence authorization bill now making its way through the House—would have subjected intelligence operations by agencies like the Pentagon and FBI to "coordination" under a process to be developed by CIA director Porter Goss and director of national intelligence John Negroponte. The move would have represented a victory for the CIA in the intel turf battles that have occasionally erupted with Pentagon and FBI intelligence operations—though officials at the CIA, the Defense Department and the FBI insist conflicts are rare and coordination is already being improved. But Hoekstra says House Armed Services Committee Chairman Duncan Hunter objected that the legislation would unduly expand Negroponte's authority almost before the ink has even dried on last year's law creating the new intelligence czar post....
