BAGHDAD, June 19 (Xinhuanet) -- A US Marine was shot dead during a major US offensive in western Iraq, the military said on Sunday.

The soldier, assigned to Regimental Combat Team 2 of the Second Marine Division, was killed in action on Saturday by small arms fire, the military said in a statement.

The name of the victim was being withheld pending next-of-kin notification, the statement added.

BAGHDAD, Iraq The military has announced the first American death from Operation Spear in Iraq.

Officials say the Marine was killed by small arms fire yesterday.

The death came during an offensive along the Iraq-Syria border, which intelligence officials say is being used by extremist groups to smuggle foreign fighters into Iraq.

U-S and Iraqi forces have been shouting through loudspeakers to residents in that part of Iraq to leave their homes and head to a safer area.
