CIA has 'excellent' idea where bin Laden is-Time
CIA Director Porter Goss said he has an "excellent" idea where Osama bin Laden is hiding, but the al Qaeda leader will not be brought to justice until weak links in counterterrorism efforts are strengthened, Time magazine reported on Sunday.

In his first interview since becoming head of the CIA last year, Goss also told the magazine the insurgency in Iraq was not quite in its last throes, but close to it.Goss did not say where he believed bin Laden was hiding, but intelligence experts have said the al Qaeda leader who has evaded an extensive U.S.-led manhunt is probably in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"I have an excellent idea of where he is. What's the next question?" Goss said in the interview."In the chain that you need to successfully wrap up the war on terror, we have some weak links. And I find that until we strengthen all the links, we're probably not going to be able to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice," Goss said. "We are making very good progress on it."

He cited some of the difficulties as "dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you're dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play."

68. They must first file everything in triplicate, get it notarized then...
step backward 5 steps on one foot, turn around, say the magic work, drink a cup full of panther urine real fast then recite all of Ibsen's works backwards.
Then and only then will they have tied up the loose ends.

I find it interesting that, only a few weeks ago they went from, "we really don't have any idea where he is" to "now we know where he is".

So let me try and untangle this latest bit on the spin machine tour.

See for a long time they were saying they didn't know where the hell 0sama was. They kept repeating it. Now it appears that that had a negative effect on the publics impression of the war in Iraq and moron*. "How can I trust a prez that doesn't even know how to find Osama and is terrible at the Iraq war?"

Now they are saying, "we know right were he is, we have know all along, infact we know the apt number he's staying in", but they just can't get to him. They torture prisoners, they invade a country based on lies, the kill 100,000+ Iraqi people but now they can't get to where Osama is because of "technical reasons"???? WTF????

More bullshit. Basically, I can give you their answer, Osama is on earth. There you go. And I bet you anything he's in Pakistan.

Look at the reality of the situation. During this whole fucked up war on terror, we have been told time and time again not to go into Pakistan by the Pakistani gov't. If we did, it would piss off the locals, probably have Musarrif(sp) dead and nuts in charge of Pakistan's nukes.

On one of my very first posts in DU, I stated, "if you really wanted to fight terror, and you want to have an axis of evil, they should be the following nations: Pakistan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia". All repressive countries, all manufacturing terrorists. They repress their population, the population feels helpless to rise up to their home gov't so they take out their frustrations and all their problems on us. They are partly correct. We keep these gov'ts going, with our money, support of oil and weapons. Want to solve the terror issue?
Stop the money to the gov't and make sure it goes to non gov't agencies that help feed and clothe the poor, stop buying their oil and create a real alt fuel program here, and lastly, stop selling them weapons! Duh.

14. How long is that border?....

First, he says he has an "excellent" idea where OBL is hiding....and then he says he is PROBABLY in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Exactly how many miles does this Pakistan/Afghanistan border cover? It doesn't sound to me like he has an "excellent" idea of where he is hiding.....

Someone should remind Goss of what his boss thinks...

"I don't know where Bin Laden is. I have no idea and I really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority."

(President Bush March 13, 2002)

The American people care, but it doesn't seem to bother President Bush.

So in other words, some of our "allies" on our war on terror are harboring him. Bush certainly didn't have any qualms about going into Afghanistan when they were harboring him.

I can't believe he even made that statement. What an insult to everyone's intelligence.

Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 10:13 AM by maddezmom
MR. RUSSERT: Ali said that Osama bin Laden is in Iraq--in Iran, excuse me.

REP. WELDON: He's been in Iran, and now we have military generals telling us that. Interestingly enough, the CIA totally refuted that when I first went to them. And by the way, the person who gave me this entire lead was a former Democrat member of Congress.

MR. RUSSERT: Can you believe that Osama bin Laden is in Iran today?

REP. WELDON: Today, I don't know. I gave the CIA hits over the past five months that he was there twice, and I also told them two years ago he was in a small town in a southern part of Iran called Ladiz, 10 kilometers inside the border with Pakistan in Baluchistan. I'd say he's been in and out repeatedly.

MR. RUSSERT: Congressman Curt Weldon, Senator Joe Biden, thank you very much for updating us on a very difficult issue.

SEN. BIDEN: Thank you very much, Tim.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8130648/

Do you have an excellent idea of where Osama Bin Laden is?

REP. CURT WELDON (R), PENNSYLVANIA: Well, Wolf, not right now I don't. But I have given three specific instances to the CIA, two to Porter Goss and one to George Tenet over the past two years. I'm confident that I know for sure he's been in and out of Iran, where Ayatollah Khomenei has been protecting him with his Revolutionary Guard.

Two years ago, he was in the southern town of Ladis (ph), ten kilometers inside the Pakistan border. I also know that earlier this year, he had a meeting with al-Zarqawi in Tehran. His whereabouts right now, no, I do not know.

BLITZER: How can you be so confident of that when the CIA says they're not confident of that? They dismiss it.

WELDON: Two years ago, the CIA was totally dismissing that bin Laden would be in Iran. But if you look at the recent comments coming out of both the CIA and some of our military generals in theater, they're now acknowledging the same thing that I've been saying -- that in fact, he's been in and out of Iran. No one can prove it exactly until we capture him.

But you asked my opinion. My opinion is he's been in and out of Iran several times over the past several years.

seriously, this is as bad and as stupid as revealing troop locations.

don't tell the enemy that you know where their key assets are, just attack the key assets.

54. They have "an excellent idea of where" bin Laden is
...but they aren't going to apprehend/kill the bastard because "dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you're dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play."

Oh, fair play, right. Sounds more like Pakistan is currently on the safe side of our ever-shifting definition of a "sovereign state".

We invaded Iraq because of 9/11 even though Saddam had nothing to do with it; now we "know" where bin Laden is but we aren't going to get him for fear of upsetting Musharraf. Meanwhile, our soldiers continue to die in Iraq, allegedly at the hands of al Qaeda-trained terrorists.....

65. further down in the article,
Goss says, "We have to find a way to work in a conventional world in unconventional ways that are acceptable to the international community."

Since when have they cared about what's acceptable to the international community?

We've seen their 'unconventional ways' - pre-emptive attacks, torture, lies to the United Nations - and there's no way to make their shit 'acceptable' to anyone.

69. Reading between the lines.
CIA Director Porter Goss said he has an "excellent" idea where Osama bin Laden is hiding, but the al Qaeda leader will not be brought to justice until weak links in counterterrorism efforts are strengthened, Time magazine reported on Sunday.

Translation: As long as the current administration is in power, OBL will remain at large

Translation: Victory in Iraq is Just Around The Corner. (TM)

Translation: We have no freakin' clue where Osama bin Laden is.

He cited some of the difficulties as "dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you're dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play."

Translation: We'd like for people to ignore future reports of illegalities committed in support of the Global War On Terrorism.

81. I was struck by his use of the term "Fair Play"
I would think that all Americans could agree that "Fair Play" should be out the window when it comes to getting OBL. Yet Goss applies it to third party sanctuaries where he thinks OBL is. And the administration disregards "Fair Play" in the concocted vanity war in Iraq. My only question is the administration's institutional schizophrenia involuntary or intentional.

CIA 'knows Bin Laden whereabouts'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4110786.stm

The US has offered $25m for Bin Laden's capture
The head of the US Central Intelligence Agency has said he has an "excellent idea" where Osama Bin Laden is hiding.
But CIA director Porter Goss did not say when the world's most wanted man would be caught, nor his location.

He told Time magazine there were "weak links" in the US-led war on terror. His remarks follow recent US criticism of Pakistan's role in hunting suspects.

Bin Laden, wanted for the 9/11 attacks, is widely believed to be in Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

?just before the 2006 elections?

What is al-Qaeda?

He has eluded capture ever since the 11 September, 2001 airliner attacks in the United States for which al-Qaeda is blamed.

Goss Claims He Has Idea Where Bin Laden Is

Mon Jun 20,12:45 PM ET

NEW YORK - The director of the CIA says he has an "excellent idea" where Osama bin Laden is hiding, but that the United States' respect for sovereign nations makes it more difficult to capture the al-Qaida chief.

In an interview with Time for the magazine's June 27 issue, Porter Goss was asked about the progress of the hunt for bin Laden.

"When you go to the question of dealing with sanctuaries in sovereign states, you're dealing with a problem of our sense of international obligation, fair play," Goss said. "We have to find a way to work in a conventional world in unconventional ways."

Asked whether that meant he knew where bin Laden is, Goss responded: "I have an excellent idea where he is. What's the next question?"
