Kerry Accuses Dean of Liking the Yankees
BOSTON - Massachusetts Senator John Kerry is again challenging presidential rival Howard Dean's allegiance to Red Sox Nation.

With Boston preparing to face archrival New York in the American League Championship Series, Kerry said Tuesday that if New York beats Boston in the best-of-seven series that begins Wednesday, he'll send New England clam chowder to Dean's campaign. He wants Manhattan chowder from Dean if Boston wins.

Kerry last month accused Dean, the former Vermont governor and current front-runner for the Democratic nomination, of being a Yankees fan.

Dean, a New York native, called the accusation insulting, and insisted he backs Boston.

4. Hillary was accused of lying about liking the Yankees (she wasn't)
Bloomberg was derided for being a Red Sox fan. A month later he bought the Daily News' s endorsement (and the mayoralty)

25. Hillary's actually a Cub fan
Growing up in Illinois.....she only roots for the Yankees (yek!) because the Mets and Cubs have been archrivals....

6. Kerry wouldn't be pulling this unless he was losing support in MA
Dean's got a lot of supporters in Massachusetts,
and I think Kerry's worried that he'll lose some
of the native volunteer pool.

8. WHO CARES?
I live in Clinton, New York, and root for the Red Sox and the Cubbies.

So Hillary says she was always a Yankee fan. BIG DEAL! Did you expect her to root for the White Sux?

9. Kerry's lying, and I can prove it!
There is no such thing as Manhattan clam chowder. They make a clam soup with tomato sauce, but it isn't chowdah! No one, I repeat, no one from New England calls that stuff chowdah!

Kerry's an impostor!

(humor alert -- I like Kerry, honest)

11. Kerry was just TERRIFIC
at the Iowa caucus meeting shown on C-Span last night. Basically I am an ABB, but I do think Kerry is very smart on the issues. He was clear-headed, intelligent, and blistering on Bush's failures. He also had that "presidential" touch - gravitas, presence and tremendous command and grasp of the issues and their complexiites.
So - SO WHAT on this nonsense? (And anyway - I don't even know which countries are playing in this World Series.)

15. Are you serious about not knowing which countries are playing in the world
series? The US is the only country playing in the world series this year. The only other country to ever be represented is Canada. Not much of a world series, huh?

14. this has nothing to do with Kerry's sense of humor
it's got a lot to do with Kerry's sense of the inevitable (read: failed presidential bid).

21. While it would be hard to vote for a Yankee fan,
I'm not sure what the point of all this is. It's just a gimmick desinged to get pub in the NH media market, which is mostly Red Sox fans.

Anybody know who Clark's favorite team is? I will guess St. Louis, which is Clinton's team, but who knows.

22. Now these are the real issues
Screw healthcare, foreign policy and the economy. Actually, do they care as much in NH about this as they do in MA. I know that in Boston it's a very, very passionate issue to the point where it might actually make a difference to some people, but are the passions as strong when you get a couple of hundred miles away from Fenway?

27. They certainly are!
This actually will have an impact on NH voters...and Maine voters, and Rhode Island voters, etc. To some people this could very well be a deciding factor.

My mind was already made up.

28. Q: Do they care in NH? A: Carlton (Pudge) Fisk
Born: December 26, 1947, at Bellows Falls, Vermont. Height: 6'2", Weight: 220 lbs. Batted right, threw right.

Native New Englander Carlton Fisk, who as a boy dreamed of playing power forward for the Boston Celtics, instead hit one of the most famous home runs in baseball history and became the Game's most durable catcher. Though he didn't play his first full season until age 24, Fisk set major league records for most games caught (2,226) and most home runs by a catcher (351). Fisk grew up in Charlestown, New Hampshire, and briefly attended the University of New Hampshire, but left school when the Red Sox made him their first pick in the 1967 draft. He played 11 years in Boston before signing as a free agent in 1981 with the Chicago White Sox, for whom he played 13 years and retired as the franchise's all-time home run leader.

23. Laugh all you want, but it's right here in the story:
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 05:05 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
"Hypersensitive Red Sox fans take New York-Boston stuff seriously."... which is why I think Dean was DUMB for even admitting he only switched allegiances a couple years ago. Sure it looks petty on the surface but it REALLY does register with a big chunk of people.

Historical Note: Some of you may not know that Red Sox great Ted Williams missed several seasons of ball to fly as a fighter pilot in both the Korean and 2nd World Wars. He was something of an ace too.
SO if you're looking at the measure of a true patriot, there you have it: A man who put service of country ahead of his personal ambitions.

24. Dean should quit lying about his record
I think the record is very clear that Dean kowtows to the Yankees and has questionable at best allegiance to the Red Sox.

He should come clean instead of lying about his record. Either he supports the Red Sox or he doesn't. This is what the MTP interview was all about. Dean's waffling.

36. From way out west where Mojo, Ichiro, and sushi rule baseball
I quite caring about baseball when the Mariners started to tank after the all-star game, funny that's also when I noticed Dean.

I know there is something very deep seated back east between the Red Socks and the Yanks, and many of us west coasters prefer sushi over the good ol American hot dog, but don't you think politics is far more important. Who cares if Dean likes the Yanks or the Socks. Beside deep down the top dems. would like to see Ichiro and the Seattle Mojo win it all. :)
