US seeks political boost from Iraq conference

AMMAN (AFP) - The US administration goes into an international conference on Iraq this week seeking a new display of world support for its policies that are losing confidence at home.

Washington also sees Wednesday's gathering in Brussels, co-sponsored with the European Union, as a sign of new-found trans-Atlantic cooperation on Iraq after the deep rifts over the war, US officials said.

They said little concrete was likely to emerge from the conference expected to bring together up to 85 countries and groups to discuss reconstruction of the battered country.

~snip~

The conference comes at an opportune moment for President George W. Bush's administration as it struggles to maintain domestic support for its Iraq operation while US deaths mount.

2. Hate when it's worded: US seeks...

any EU nation who doesn't do what they are establishing in this story will be painted as obstructionists and freedom haters.

13. Sorry, I forgot to post a link to that for ya;
On Iraq, the President's 37 percent approval rating (not much different from the 38 percent he received last month) is also similar to the low ratings he received last summer.
