Pentagon joining White House effort to boost public support for presence in Iraq
--------------------------------
PENTAGON With poll numbers suggesting declining public support for the continued U-S presence in Iraq, the Bush administration is launching an all-out push to defend its policies.

The Pentagon will join the effort this week, with officials planning a series of speeches, statements, and events to highlight what they call "a year's worth of progress in Iraq."

Tomorrow, Lieutenant General John Vines, the commanding general of the Multi-National Corps Iraq, is expected to provide new detail on the move toward standing up an effective Iraqi security force and neutralizing insurgents.

On Thursday, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld travels to Capitol Hill with CentCom chief John Abizaid and General George Casey, the commander of U-S forces in Iraq. The men are expected to outline for the Senate Armed Services Committee the current state of the fight in Iraq and the progress that they believe has been made in the nearly one year since the establishment of a sovereign Iraqi government.

17. Right.
CNN started last week with the story on the insurgent's torture rooms we'd discovered. Reported without the tiniest little bit of irony of course. Hard to know how they can keep a straight face when they're dishing out such blatant propaganda.

6. Style v. Substance.
They believe that stylistic changes to the facade will change public opinion. This is the same mistaken belief that they have about the Arab world in general, that a good PR campaign will turn everything around. It might, if the PR campaign were viewed as credible. But, when the campaign is just more lipstick on a pig that we are already well-acquainted with... well, it's not going to get them far.

9. Propaganda lyrics
By Sparks

Propaganda lyrics
(Ron Mael)
"Hello soldier boy,"
oh boy, shes spewing out her propaganda, propaganda
Might makes right, though you're wrong,
you're right to fight her propaganda, propaganda, propaganda
"Come to our side", she does say
"Come on over", she does say
Well I dont need more
Competition for
Her affection
You should fight on
Fight on
Over there

Where's your will to win, to act like Gunga Din
Through propaganda, propaganda
Where's your will to fight, to know what's wrong and right
And propaganda, propaganda, propaganda
"Come on over", you will hear
In a voice that comes in clear
Then I think of you where the skies are blue
And I know that I must fight on, fight on, over there

Duck that missile, boy, that missile whistles like her
Propaganda, propaganda
Keep your powder dry and always shy away from propaganda
Propaganda, propaganda
"Think it over", she will say
"Jump of Dover", she will say
Well I'm not about to be turned around about by this tactic
I will fight on, fight on, over there

Oh propaganda, oh propaganda
"Hello soldier boy", she is spewing her propaganda, propaganda
"Hello soldier boy", she is spewing her propaganda, propaganda
"Come to our side", she does say
"Come on over", she does say
Well I don't need more competition to her affection
You should fight on, fight on, over there

Lack of subtlety defines our enemy and propaganda, propaganda
"Hello G.I. Joe", oh no, I'll never go for propaganda, propaganda, propaganda
There's a loved one back at home, who assumes that I'm alone
Saying no to lies, saying no to spies
I intend to be her groom soon, groom soon, over there

11. The sheeple are waking from their slumber
Tv season is in reruns. American idol is over. Jacko got acquitted. If Boooosh and the Pentagon think serving us polished turds is going to boost morale for our continued invasion of Iraq, they are even more stupid than I suspected. I hope they do it. It will be fun watching them squirm all summer long. They would be better off dreaming up another MIHOP .

13. I certain that we can count on all those very sharp pencils
being held by that lively press corp to make certain that the truth about all of the lies spewed by these PR geniuses are pointed out during this great rush to sell the continuing fiasco.

:sarcasm:

They'll make certain that all those things that they know (like during the run-up to war) are told loudly and clearly so that the fine citizens of this country have every fact and facet upon which to understand the situation.

19. related: Bush Claims September 11th as Basis for Attacking Iraq
http://www.politicalaffairs.net/article/articleview/1330/1/32/

excerpt:

In remarks during his radio address yesterday, Bush seemed to backtrack on his rationale for war by stating that the reason the US went to war in Iraq was because the US was attacked on September 11th.

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said earlier last week that the war was justified because people from the region had attacked the US on September 11th.

Despite the apparent confusion by the administration about who committed the terrorist attacks on 9/11, up to this week, the administration denied that it had ever argued that Iraq was linked to or behind the September 11th attacks.

This new line is part of a public relations campaign designed to shore up plummeting public opinion, which fell to only 36% of Americans supporting maintaining the occupation.

<snip>

As a result, throughout the election campaign, the Bush people insisted they never claimed that Iraq was responsible for 9/11 or that Iraq had more than fleeting exchanges with some people later tied to Al Qaeda. In fact, they said, that no WMD were found in Iraq was not an important issue, it was the mere idea that it might have possible that justified war.

29. Oh wow, you've convinced me, Rumsfeld and his boys are so good
How the holy fuck are they, having months and months to show of any progress (in their terms), not have been able to show any until now. And now they are going "all-out" to highlight that heretofor hidden progress.

Will Joe Biden critique this for us? (I'm not holding my breath.) He's supposed to be big on this issue of training of Iraqi security to take over the "war on terror", Iraq version. Now that he's running for president surely he will-or is he only running against other Demos? I'll bet you he will instead continue to attack other Democrats and not the Bush cabal.

Paying people to go out and shill for what is essentially an underfunded, mistrusted program. This is their MO, essentially: if you can pay people to sweet-talk it enough, it'll become more popular.

Keep in mind that this is your tax dollars paying for the PR.
