PBS Stories Labeled 'Anti-DeLay,' 'Anti Bush'

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 6/20/2005 3:37:00 PM

Senator Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) spoke on the Senate floor Monday against the politicizing of noncommercial broadcasting and the cutting of its budget.

Reading from what he said was raw data from a consultant hired by Corporation for Public Broadcasting Chairman Ken Tomlinson to evaluate bias in the Now show when it was still hosted by Bill Moyers, Dorgan ticked off stories that had been labeled "anti-Bush," "anti-DeLay" (embattled House Speaker Tom DeLay) and "anti-corporation."

"That is not the prism through which we evaluate whether a program makes sense," Dorgan told his colleagues.

The CPB is meeting in Washington Monday and Tuesday, and Dorgan advised it not to name former Republican National Committee Chairman Patricia Harrison as president.

1. I guess whether the story is "true" or "false" is irrelevant?

2. It has to be "fair and balanced" like the real news shows.
Anti-Clinton fare...that's okay.

15. Right. If the truth is on one-side we still have to give equal and
equivalent air time to the other side's spin, smears and lies.

The Daily Show's airing of that segment from CNN where the woman just lied and cited fraudulent numbers about gays and pedophilia is what springs to mind.

3. "anti-corporation!?!" next it will be anti-heterosexual, anti-christian,
anti-rich, etc. Glad I stopped donating to PBS when Bush stole
control.

17. You said much of what I was going to say.
"Anti-corporation" is disturbingly like the "anti-American" of the McCarthy (witch-hunt) Era. Indeed it made my skin crawl...literally. "Anti-heterosexual" and "anti-Christian" are terms already in use -- frightening evidence of how far BushCo has already thrust us toward theocracy.

(Again the parallel between feudalism and global monopolism -- both depend on theocracy for bolstering and maintaining their omnipotence.)

4. Well the TRUTH is anti-Delay, anti-Bush, anti-Cheney, anti-Rumsfeld
etc........

You simply can't tell the truth and NOT be critical of Bushco.

5. Truth is anti-bush...
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 04:02 PM by personman
The mere presence of intelligence is an anti-bush bias, IMO.

And if you have some sense of empathy and compassion combined with those, you are the walking nightmare of every republican douchebag on earth.

:)

Edit: Oops, didn't even notice you said the truth is anti-bush in your subject, suffice to say I agree with you. :)

6. The truth right now is "Anti-Delay,' 'Anti-Bush'
Just because they don't like the truth doesn't make it untrue.

7. Truth is the first casualty
in this political atmosphere.

If you want to hear or speak the truth, you must endure all types of labels - commie, un-patriotic, lie-brul etc.

The brainwashing of Amerika is complete.

The stupids are in charge and they are a nasty bunch of murderous liars.

9. Why not "pro-truth"?
That's the thing aboout facts.. they are not pro or anti anything.. They just ARE...

PBS should/could be the antidote for corporate over-produced news on so-called mainstream media...instead they have become the same beast..

12. The problem is..
.. that -any- story fairly and objectively told on Bush or DeLay will look anti-Bush and anti-DeLay only because they are both such anti-human, meanspirited people interested only in helping corporations and theocrats.

13. Why no funding cuts to the Faith-Based Initiative?
Edited on Mon Jun-20-05 04:19 PM by SimpleTrend
It may seem unconnected to this story, but from the article:
Dorgan also called an "ominous sign" the House Appropriations Committee vote last week to cut funding to various noncommercial programs, including kids shows, networking costs and the switch to digital.
