A school's anguish
Des Moines police awakened several families before dawn Tuesday to break up a suicide pact that involved at least nine Lincoln High School students.

Police visited numerous homes between 1 and 5 a.m. to talk to parents whose children's names emerged in the investigation. Two of the students were taken immediately by their parents to Iowa Lutheran Hospital, according to a note sent to Lincoln teachers Tuesday. It also said there were no injuries in either case.

A third student was taken from Lincoln to a hospital about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday after taking an unspecified substance, the note to teachers said.
