California Democrats Say They Will Demand Accountability
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 04:14 PM by onehandle
A day after a bitter defeat for Gov. Gray Davis of California and the Democratic Party, the California Democratic leadership vowed to birddog Governor-elect Arnold Schwarzenegger throughout his term, and predicted that the novice politician would suffer for his campaign promises.

"Schwarzenegger made a lot of promises that we know are lies," Bob Mulholland, the campaign adviser to the California Democratic Party, said today. "And now he's going to find out that being in the governor's office is not a movie script. We'll be holding his feet to the fire."

The Democratic official noted that among the promises that the Democratic leadership will closely monitor are Mr. Schwarzenegger's vow to repeal the car tax as soon as he took office — thus taking about $4.2 billion in revenue from the already cash-strapped state — and others involving spending cuts.

3. If Ahhhnold fails to do anything decent
in the next 100 days. On the 101st day, he's going to have to face a recall campaign, much like Davis did, and this time, the recall will have certain limitations, such as no 135 quacks trying to vie for governorship. No silly "Who wants to be a CA Governor - the Debating Game" - with Repukkk Kennedy (Yes, she's a Republican - and she dressed CONSERVATIVELY on that goddamn show). Just ONE candidate from each party. That includes Democratic, Green, Repukkks, Communist, Liberterian, etc.

7. Look for them to try and tighten the recall laws
I bet that they will do just that. They never do want to play by the same rules as the rest of us.

5. Hope the Dems don't adopt an uncooperative stance that ends up backfiring.
First thing the house and assembly Dems in CA need to do (maybe they've already done this - I don't know) is get on the offensive and come up with a balanced budget proposal. If they wait for Arnie to go first they'll be stuck playing defense the rest of the game.

14. It won't backfire--we'll kill him with kindness.
I think that we can coopt him into passive "moderation." Remember that Davis was not exactly some pro-labor crusader during much of his first term. The new guy won't be too much different in many regards, with any hope. Now, let's move into a position of on a high plane, defending our agenda that California agrees with!

We can lose the election and still advance our agenda, especially under present conditions. We need to raise expectations on the new executive that we expect him do support civil rights, protect education and health care funding, and not attack working families. If we repeat the mantra over and over and over, he will accede on some points, and be rendered impotant in others.

There will be no pro-"workers compensation reform" uprising by the aggrieved masses. On these issues, he's hot the country club and not much else.

16. Just don't be too helpful. Let him find his way. Keep putting the
ball back in his court. When there's a problem and he wants "bipartisanship" and to "work together" just agree. Then ask him how he wants to solve the problem. Maybe even go along with it, just make sure that everyone knows Arnold's actions were his decision.

Do not enable him! Do not try to fix things so that people aren't hurt too much. The people need to see what happens when he's governor and decide if they want to re-elect him or throw him out.

What are you suggesting. Let the State continue in a downward spiral so that you can claim a political win? I don't understand your meaning.

18. they had a balanced budget proposal
unfortunately, the damn Repukes were able to block it because it involved tax increases and per the state constitution, you have to have 2/3 vote to pass any tax increases

the Repukes were able to block the budget long enough to get this damn recall on the ballot

32. YES.
That's exactly right. I hope we learned a lesson with what happened with Bush.
Our majority in Congress is our last bastion of hope. We can't afford to lose it, and that means doing exactly what you said. Not attacking him, but making sure we're the ones fixing things.

15. Too bad any and all proposals to be considered
has to go through the heavily Democratic CA Legislature.

Too bad the chances of a Repukkk proposals surviving through the Legislature is slim to none without being shredded.

13. Nothing in the article about the $9B Enron owes CA
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 04:45 PM by rocknation
If the Dems really want to make things hot for him, ask him to finish recovering the $9 billion Bustamante sued Enron for. That would prove once and for all that the meeting Arnie had with Enron is not going to result in Enron paying only two cents on the dollar!

22. That is the most important thing that they could do.

It would even help to give them a balanced budget. If not now, at some time in the near future.

26. How to Measure Accountability
A few years ago, NPR did an interview with a man representing a group of people who were sponsoring a project to take "snapshots" of the Internet on a given day at a specific time throughout the world's time zones. I think it was to be a time capsule study of how the world might change and how it might remain the same over a given period of time. If Californians are going to hold the Groper accountable, I think it will be necessary to have the same kind of "snapshots" of California--sort of a before and after thing.
Is there any group out there that can start recording information like the grocery store price of milk, bread, eggs, hamburger; the number of prisoners today and the cost of prison and prisoner upkeep; the condition of current infrastructure--bridges, roads, parks and schools, hopes of parents for their children, hopes of students for a productive, meaningful life; etc, etc, etc?
Perhaps, the reason the repukes keep winning (beside the fact that they steal elections) is that we fail to remember what yesterday looked like.
