Marine Who Rescued Pfc. Lynch Gets Military Honor
Marine Who Rescued Pfc. Lynch Gets Military Honor

LOUISVILLE, KY -- A Louisville native who took part in U.S. combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and helped rescue injured Army Pfc. Jessica Lynch has won a Marine Corps award. Sgt. Bryan Cox recently was named Marine Corps aviation enlisted air crewman of the year.

Cox, 28, was the crew chief on a Marine CH-53 helicopter, which is used to ferry Marines, Navy SEALS, and Army Special Forces and Rangers into and out of combat missions and hostile situations. He flew on a rescue mission to pick up injured Special Forces soldiers and Afghan Northern Alliance fighters outside Kandahar in Afghanistan. The Marine was also was the crew chief on the lead helicopter in Lynch's rescue.

Afterward, when allegations surfaced that the rescue might have been staged, Cox was angry.

"I can tell you right now it wasn't a setup," he said. "We had some (bullet) holes in the plane to show it wasn't a setup."

2. CH-53 ~ Isn't that what they call the sky hook?
CH stands for Cargo Helicopter, UH for Utility Helicopter and AH Assault Helicopter. It is an awful large helicopter to be involved in such an operation. These are the ones used to carry trucks and stuff around. It must have been a VERY COLD extraction. Without any hint of enemy around or they would never have risked such a helicopter.

11. CH-53s
Are sent to some of the hottest LZs.

They are the SF insertion/extraction helo of choice.

They are also the primary CSAR helo.

5. oh, please
My Lhasa Apso could have rescued that girl by trotting into the hospital with a "Follow Me" sign.

I'm so sick of the lies meant to motivate the home front. All of the fake feel-good stories in the world can't mitigate the horrors of this war in the past or those to follow.

6. The doctor should be right next to him
The doctor who claims that, at great personal risk, he went to the nearest U.S. camp and told the soldiers where to find Ms. Lynch as he was concerned for her safety should be honored as well.

7. Not a Very Bright Crewchief
In my 13 years in the Army all the crewchiefs I have worked with referred to their aircraft as aircraft, never as a plane. And considering this guy was a crewchief of a helicopter, and still calls
it a plane.

Anyway who's to say that the chopper wasn't hit by the trigger happy
rescuers on the ground.

10. Fine
But the most important thing is what kinds of economic opportunities will he face? What will his veterans benefits look like once he leaves the Marines? Awards are all fine and good, but they don't pay the bills.
