Gephardt Gets 16th Union Endorsement
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Oct. 8 — Democratic presidential hopeful Dick Gephardt won the backing of his 16th labor union Wednesday.

The Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union, which represents 120,000 workers, said it would back the Missouri congressman because of his commitment to American workers.

Union president Frank Hurt called the effort to defeat President Bush "the most important thing that any working person can ever do because of his policies that favor the corporations and the rich."

The union has about 2,000 members in Iowa, which is holding presidential caucuses on Jan. 19. Gephardt called the number significant, saying he would need about 30,000 votes to win in Iowa. "If I can just turn out the union supporters, then we'll be close to that number," he said.

1. Well that's OK, but...the Unions have never been weaker in the US!
So whoopie!

2. Good job Gephardt. Again.
For tirelessly fighting to support working Americans and their families, I believe Dick Gephardt has earned the vote of every single one of us.
As for the poster to whom I won't directly respond, sorry sucker. Unions do more to get their supporters to the polls than any other group within the Democratic party. If you think the Unions have no power, then you think the Democrats have no power.

3. Gephardt hasn't earned my vote
in fact, he lost it when he took part in the Rose Garden IWR photo op.

his inability, or unwillingness, to show up for the majority of votes in the House this session hasn't helped either.

4. when I saw this thread had three posts
I made a bet with myself that at least one would contain the phrase "Rose Garden." :-)

6. no, just commenting on how automatic it has become
it's become kind of a discussion-stopper, however valid the issue is.

Every candidate has an equivalent of the "Rose Garden." It's like if every time someone mentioned Kucinich, people were to talk about his abortion flip-flop. That's a totally valid issue for some people, but those people don't find it necessary to bring it up every single time.

7. Kucinich's abortion flip-flop didn't play a part (direct or indirect) in…
advancing Bush's twisted agenda.

Gephardt's Rose Garden appearance, on the other hand, did.

8. part of it is the non sequitir
it's funny that it's your own thread. You posted the thing about the unions, but then say it doesn't matter because of the war. I don't get the thinking, but it's ok, you're not the only one. :-)

9. I posted this because it's LBN and nobody else had posted it
yesterday someone said I only post pro-Dean & anti-Clark articles which is not true.

the fact of the matter is that I have Google News (search parameter = "Howard Dean") bookmarked and I post whatever articles come up that haven't already been posted.

Most often those articles are focused on Dean, but occasionally he'll just be mentioned and the article will focus on another candidate.

I don't discriminate in terms of what I choose to post, and I don't always agree with the content of the articles.
