Bush calls Israel's strike on Syria 'essential'
Bush calls Israel's strike on Syria 'essential'
Janine Zacharia Oct. 8, 2003

US President George W. Bush on Tuesday again threw his conditional support behind Israel's strike on a Palestinian terrorist training camp in Syria describing the strike as "essential" to Israel's campaign to stamp out terror.

Bush also, however, urged Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to "avoid escalating violence."

"The prime minister must defend his country. It's essential," Bush told reporters after his cabinet meeting when asked if he thought Israel's strike on Syria carried out in retaliation for Saturday's bombing in Haifa that killed 19 was a problem.

"This is a country which recently was attacked by a suicider that killed innocent children and women, people that were celebrating in a restaurant... He must do what is necessary to protect himself. At the same time, as I said yesterday and will continue to say to Ariel Sharon, avoid escalating violence."

Asked about Sharon's comments Tuesday during a Yom Kippur War memorial service that Israel "will strike its enemies in every place and in every way," Bush said the US would act the same way as Sharon has, a rare public acknowledgement of the similarity between Washington's war on terrorism and Israel's.

9. Essential to prove that PNAC / Israeli security policies
...can do something effective when the truth is they are ineffective compared to thoughtful policies of engagement and compromise. For all the money Israel spends on security they are as vulnerable as ever.

Likewise America, which now has a defense budget larger than at the height of the Vietnam war, has never been more vulnerable. PNACer Kristol asked for 44 Billion more for DOD (per year) while the 87 billion pork barrel is still rolling around the beltway.

Such belligerent policies as taking other peoples territory don't do much for security but it is extremely profitable and rewarding for the movers and shakers.
