NEW YORK -- A California peace activist Wednesday denied she kicked anyone while being thrown out of Madison Square Garden after unfurling an anti-war banner she smuggled had into the Republican National Convention in her pantyhose.
June Brashares, 41, of San Francisco, is on trial in Manhattan's Criminal Court charged with misdemeanor assault, attempted assault, disorderly conduct and harassment for allegedly kicking a security officer during her protest on Sept. 2, 2004.
Testifying in her own defense, Brashares said she smuggled the banner _ which read "Bush Lies. People Die." _ into the Garden by sticking it down her pantyhose. Inside, after passing a security checkpoint, she put the banner in her purse, she said.
Brashares said she made the banner that morning using a bedsheet and color markers she had bought at a store near the Brooklyn home of a friend with whom she was staying.
