Bush welcomes Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari to the White House Friday at a time when more and more Americans say they have soured on the war and want US troops to come home.
Jaafari's visit to the White House, his first, aims to highlight progress in Iraq even as some of Bush's Republicans in the US Congress and broad segments of the public say they mistrust sunny forecasts and want an exit strategy.
Bush sees the meeting "as an opportunity to talk about the progress that the Iraqi people are making on the political front, to talk about the security situation and the training of Iraqi security forces, and how that's moving forward," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Wednesday.
The visit comes as the US president, his job approval ratings slumping in some polls to the lowest levels since he took office in January 2001, has launched a public relations offensive to recapture US public support.
