CLAUDE, TX -- A massive crack in the earth opened up last week in Claude, Texas and its creating a stir among geologists.

Geologists said Tuesday the crack was a joint in the earth's crust. They believe the opening is the result of a weak point in the joint where one spot slips away from the other.

Some parts measure more than 30-feet deep and it drained what use to be a pond. Experts say earth cracks are common but the size of the crack in Claude is not.

There's some seismic activity in Texas, but many more "surface faults." They don't slip suddenly & cause earthquakes, but their slow movement can damage buildings, bridges & roads.

Actually I'd meant to respond to the original post.

But as long as I'm here, normally, oil comes out of porous rock, not huge underground caverns, so what happens when the oil comes out is that the rock just gets less 'dense', not create pockets that can collapse.

However, I do remember some stories out of Mexico in the 80's that described the ground sinking a few feet in some oil production areas due to the massive removal of oil.
