A day after Arnold Schwarzenegger's victory in the recall election, a dispute erupted Wed-nesday between the governor-elect and the state's most powerful legislator over the tripling of California's car tax.
Schwazenegger, moving to keep a campaign promise, told state Senate leader John Burton, a Democrat from San Francisco, that he could single-handedly repeal the tax hike as soon as he took office. The irascible senator disagreed.

Schwarzenegger's base of support is heavily white, male, conservative, Republican and Christian, according to a Los Angeles Times Poll of voters who cast ballots Tuesday. By contrast, Schwarzenegger was relatively unpopular among blacks, Latinos, Asians, Democrats, liberals and Jews, although he ran stronger than many Republicans have in the past. He ran weakest in San Francisco and the surrounding area, as well as parts of Los Angeles County.
Unfortunately for Schwarzenegger, that's the turf of the liberal Democrats who dominate the Legislature and set its agenda.

he said that Ahnold wants to repeal the car tax and yet not cut educational funding. Since education counts for 40% of the budget, he doesn't see how AS can keep both promises. And if AS tries to Terminate the legislature by becoming a dictator, he'll have a fight on his hands.

My former home getting fucked over by a muscle head. My parents and sister living near LA are livid. I'm sure all my old democratic friends in Pasedena and Claremont have come unglued, this was 1994 all over, 70% of the voters Tuesday were white males and females, the state is less 50% white. Conservative whites went to the polls Tuesday, alot of our base stayed home, AGAIN.

Prop. 13 has royally screwed children in this state. Wealthy districts make up the shortfall to some extent by asking parents to fund programs through the PTA - often through "suggested" contributions of hundreds of dollars. I have a friend whose children go to public school in Calabasas - a very well-to-do suburb. Each year she gets a fund raising letter from the PTA asking for $350.00 per child. This is on top of a bunch of other fundraisers. I get hit up for almost as much at my daughter's school.

In the districts where the parents simply don't have the money, kids go without.

Meantime I heard the neanderthal at his press conference yesterday talking about cutting "waste" out of government and mentioning "medi-cal" in the same breath. Sure Arnie, go after the meager health-care supplemental of our poorest citizens to fund tax cuts for Jay Leno and his fleet of luxury cars.

People have awfully short memories. The California "car tax" only came down a few years ago when there was a big surplus. Once Enron got through with us an automatic trigger pushed it back up to where it had been all along. If you don't want to pay a big car tax, don't buy a big, expensive car. Sheesh.

I moved from California in 1979, having lived there since 1954. Before I left, I knew of one person who whined and moaned constantly about the need to pass Prop. 13, claiming she and her family would have to move out of the state if it didn't as they wouldn't be able to afford staying (they bought their house in 1965). It passed and she and her husband promply bought a "weekend retreat" (a second house) at Big Bear Lake.

That action alone taught me a lot about setting priorities.

State services, schools, etc. have been cut down to the bone already. I hate to elaborate on what State of Calif. retirees are dealing with re: the healthcare they are receiving. In my case, I forfeit my entire pension in order to pay in part for the health plan I have, plus send in checks! Bad enough already and this is Davis' work. It won't be getting any better either!

If politics is warfare by other means, then the California Democrats will now be tempted to respond in kind to the stomping they suffered yesterday. This has nothing to do with whether Gray Davis deserved his ignominious fate, and everything to do with whether Republican aggression is answered with timidity or strength.
According to the state Constitution, Arnold Schwarzenegger will be vulnerable to a new recall petition within 90 days -- which means, as Kos pointed out this morning, that the filing could take place just in time for the March 2004 presidential primary.
Is this a good idea? Perhaps not, but printing up and circulating Recall Arnold petitions is still worth considering.

Gilmore promised to phase the car tax out in three installments, eventually 'zeroing out' at the end of year 3. This "one trick pony" act got him elected, and of course the car tax gimmick was stopped short of the year 3 goal due to "unexpected" budget shortfalls. So now it's up to the Democrat Warner to undue the mess. We now have a smaller car tax, but a revenue crisis the likes of which this state has not seen in years.

when the Virginia economy hit the skids, Jim Gilmore taxcuts to the rich had promised not hold off on reducing the car tax in the event financial circumstances turned for the worse. But oh no! Gilmore didn't lift a finger, and now the VA finanaces are very close, if not already FUBAR. IN state colege tution is skyrocketing--when I went to ODU a semester tution for in state students like me was only $2200 or so for 12 credits, now it's like $4000 or more :eyes: And the local cities like Norfolk, Chesapeake, etc have had to jack up their property and other local taxes and fees. so California, if you want to see your future, just look at us here in Virginia :eyes:

2. An awful lot of people

don't seem to understand the connection between taxes and services.

Many years ago I lived in Minneapolis and worked in a job where most of my fellow employees had moved there recently (within the year or so) from Texas. To a person they complained bitterly about the tax burden living in Minnesota. In the next breath they'd invariably marvel at the fine schools, the good parks, the well-maintained infrastructure. I never got over being stunned that they couldn't see how one led to the other.

They did an exit favorable/disfavorable poll during the recall election. What was interesting was that it was about 48%/48% with women actually giving him a higher DISAPPROVAL score. That means all those who didn't vote for him didn't like him. Arnold still thinks, like Boy George at the outset, that he can somehow charm or bully bluff his way to get what he wants. I was so bummed when he didn't run for mayor of San Francisco. He's being term-limited out of the State Senate. He was mentioned as a possible Lt. Gov. if Bustamonte had won.
