Syria calls on Washington to prove it aids insurgents

By Leila Hatoum
Daily Star staff
Friday, June 24, 2005

BEIRUT: Syria hit back at U.S. criticism that it is supporting Iraqi insurgents and demanded Washington and Baghdad provide evidence to substantiate the claims. Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq Sharaa said: "We will be contacting officials in Baghdad very soon to know the source and truth of these allegations against Syria."

He added: "We will counter any accusation by evidence and facts and take this to the highest level."

Syria's rebuttal comes hard on the heels of U.S. claims that Syrian intelligence agents are still operating in Lebanon following this week's murder of anti-Syrian politician George Hawi, the third political assassination in Beirut in four months.

Speaking yesterday an unidentified U.S. official said: "There is no question that Syrian military intelligence agents have stayed behind, and that they are exerting a highly negative influence on the situation in Lebanon."

What a novel idea. No, he prefers faith-based accusations.

5. BBC; Syria queries Iraq border claims
Syria says it will ask Baghdad for evidence of foreign fighters crossing its borders adding that it wants to open a "new page" with Iraq.
Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara also says Damascus hoped to reopen its embassy in Baghdad "very soon".

Washington has frequently accused Syria of allowing militants to cross into Iraq to join the insurgency there.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice repeated the warning on Thursday, calling for less words and more action.

"This is a government that can take action on its border to prevent these cross-border activities which are really contributing dramatically to insecurity in Iraq," she said after a meeting of G8 foreign ministers in London.

6. That's a ballsy move by Syria
Syria knows nobody will believe Bush's lies about Syria after the WMD lie. Bush and Company have NO CREDIBILITY. Now THAT is a national security threat to America. The emperor has no clothes and his name is CHENEY.
