Cheney, Rumsfeld fire back at Iraq doubters
~snip~

And a day before President George W. Bush meets Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari here, Vice President Cheney refused to disown his remark that the insurgency, which claimed another 18 lives Thursday, was in its "last throes."

"Any who say that we've lost this war, or that we're losing this war, are wrong. We are not," said Rumsfeld, flanked by top military commanders at a testy Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

Rumsfeld also refused to set a target date for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, despite warnings from even Senator Lindsey Graham of conservative South Carolina, that Americans were questioning what they were doing there.

"It would throw a lifeline to terrorists, who in recent months have suffered significant losses and casualties, been denied havens and suffered weakened popular support," Rumsfeld said.

Saying it doesn't make it so. It looks like these idiots think Americans are morons. They are in denial that their lies are about to sink them. Oh well I'll be glad when they are all impeached. Who are we going to install as the new President?

7. from the same article
General John Abizaid, head of US Central Command, said more troops could undermine success.

"It's very important that we work the art of this which is to have the right number that allows the development of local forces to be successful," he told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

God help those that are "artfully" dying for these soulless people.

8. Cheney defends Iraq insurgency last throes remark
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N23132210.htm

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) - Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday defended saying the Iraqi insurgency was in its "last throes," a comment that sparked criticism the White House was being too optimistic about when the violence will end.

Cheney said he was not backing down from his remark. "If you look at what the dictionary says about throes, it can still be a violent period, the throes of a revolution," Cheney said in an interview with CNN.

"The point would be that the conflict will be intense, but it's intense because the terrorists understand if we're successful at accomplishing our objective -- standing up a democracy in Iraq -- that that's a huge defeat for them. They'll do everything they can to stop it," he said. snip

He declined to speculate when the insurgency would end...

10. Somebody say they screw goats. I want to watch them deny that too.
LBJ would approve.

Of course, manipulation of the dark side is nothing new in U.S. politics. Lyndon Johnson’s campaigning is the stuff of Texas legend. In 1948, Johnson ran for the Senate against fellow Democrat Coke Stevenson, and the story goes that Johnson told an aide, “Go out there and tell ’em Coke was caught having sex with a farm animal.”

The aide protested. “But you know that’s not true!”

“Of course it’s not true!” snapped LBJ. “That’s not the point. Tell it anyway, and make him deny it.”

12. I had an encounter with a young (early 20s) man at the gas pump today
and he initiated the conversation - with a comment on the price of gas - how high it was and said he guessed it would just "keep going up".

I told him that oil was over $59 a barrel and he asked how many gallons was in a barrel - I told him 42.

He asked how come the price was so high - I told him that mostly it was due to "Mideast unrest" - he kind of looked at me funny at that point.

I said - you know - the war in Iraq and the drums being pounded for war in Iran and it would just go on and on with the leadership that we had in the White House.

Now I had his full attention and he wasn't opposed to hearing more.

I said we went to war on lies and everyone in the world knew that they were lies - except most of the people living in this country.

I asked him if he knew that there were no WMDs and that Iraq was not involved in 9/11 - he said he didn't know.

I told him that the facts had been twisted and the truth was plain to see, if only people would look for it.

I told him we had lost over 1725 military and he was surprised - said he had no idea.

We talked a bit longer - he introduced himself to me and shook my hand.

I hope he tells all of his friends.

:(

14. I live in the middle of nowhere - we get one
channel (without satellite) that is local and fuzzy. There are no "local" papers that have anything of substance - the largest town (about 60 miles away) had the most dreadful right-wing rag that is not fit to adorn my trash barrel - and the "news" people make certain that no word against der fuhrer passes their lips.

These folks live in a vacuum and so I guess anyone telling them what is going on in the world seems like they are from outer space.

It's a good thing that I'm fairly well-known or they probably would be after me with torches and pitchforks :D

16. Rumsfeld Under Fire on the Hill (Washington Post)
Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 10:58 PM by dooner
He Defends Effort in Iraq, Opposes Setting Pullout Date

By Bradley Graham
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, June 24, 2005; Page A01

Worry in Congress about the course of U.S. strategy in Iraq boiled over yesterday into a scalding attack on Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and some of the toughest questioning of the Pentagon leader since the war in Iraq began.

<snip>

In the day's most dramatic confrontation, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), a leading critic of the Iraq campaign, told Rumsfeld that the war has become a "seeming intractable quagmire." He recited a long list of what he called "gross errors and mistakes" in the U.S. military campaign and concluded with a renewed appeal for Rumsfeld to step down.

<snip>

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (D-Conn.) warned, "I fear that American public opinion is tipping away from this effort."

If there is such tipping among Americans, Rumsfeld allowed, "I have a feeling they're getting pushed" -- an apparent reference to unfavorable news coverage and political commentary. Rumsfeld expressed confidence that support would rebound.

18. I live in a military community (Pensacola, FL)....
.. home of some of the most beautiful beaches and ocean on the planet...

However. The apartment complex I live in is about 3 mi. from the NAS and across the street from the Navy Hospital, so we have alot of
military folks living here. Here's what I've heard at BBQ's, while out fishing (great fishing..) and over drinks.

..It's really alot worse than the MSM is reporting about Iraq.

..the plan is for us to be in Iraq for at least 9 years

..the military has already plotted ASR (don't know what this is) routes from Iraq to Iran

..Syria is after Iran

..the 'grunts' who do all the work know that this is about pipelines
to get Oil from the Caspian and other regions to both the Med and the Persian Gulf

...and they are NOT happy about it.

One of the guys who is a mechanic who works on my car just got back from Iraq (a motor pool wrench turner - his phrase), whose 46 yr old stepfather is being deployed there this week said that the whole thing is a mess and likened it to Vietnam. He's not old enough to remember Vietnam.

He said we can't just pull out, because it would be like the fall of Saigon (helicopters on the roof of the SV embassy, etc...).

We're screwed. I really think that only the revival of the draft will wake up the sheeple. The GOP needs to remember what waking up a sleeping tiger did to Japan (Dec 7, 1941).

We're hearing rumblings - would that the MSM show the coffins - the war would be over much sooner.

Canada.

into attacking the US, whether a base in Iraq or ship in the Gulf.

That's how they will get the draft. Will America follow then, if they perceive the situation to be a "national emergency?"

Terrific report, btw. When you hear more, please post.

being beautiful. I remember Pensacola long before there were high rises. I miss the cinder block houses painted turquoise and flamingo pink!

But you are also right about Pensacola being very conservative. Do you think any of these people could bring themselves to vote for a Democrat?

24. Connecticut has some of the nation's largest defense contractors
Many of Lieberman's constituents are working because of the war. If they weren't, the Senator himself, would be out if a job. The fact that he has survived, means he's doing something "right." You might not like it, but if you are not a CT voter, it doesn't really matter.

It's called "politics."

23. We all know that Rummie should be "under fire".
* is going to go on , no matter what is evident. As for Lierberman , we all know what he is. After watching Frontline last evening , I don't know how we are going to get out of Iraq. The gigantic bases, the thousands of foreign people servicing out troops, the entire Hallibuton base. It was staggering to view.It was evident watching the film, that the US never thought they would lose this. But also quite evident that they would lose it. My grand nephew is now going back for his 3rd tour, this time in Afganistan. They are wearing these guys out.

I've read several stories on this hearing and I've yet to see the dressing

that the FBI said will surely come. No one can stop another attack. The Bush Regiome monsters will do anything to retain their power and rob Amerika. I feel that it will happen at the low point of the Bush Regime, maybe when conclusive proof of their betrayal of Amerika surfaces with undeniable documents.
