Dean Calls on Bush to Repudiate Rove's "Desperate and Divisive" Attempts to Divide the Country

6/23/2005 6:10:00 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National Desk, Political Reporter

Contact: Karen Finney of the Democratic National Committee, 202-863-8148

WASHINGTON, June 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- With the president's lame duck status looming larger than ever, DNC Chairman Howard Dean said President Bush was facing a test of his leadership and called on him to condemn Karl Rove's desperate and divisive attempt to help the Republicans regain their political footing:

"Once again, Karl Rove is going back to the most reliable of his cynical political attacks: dividing the country over the war on terror. Americans deserve more than this kind of outrageous cheap trick. Unfortunately, given the miserable failures of Bush's foreign policy, its no wonder Rove would launch this desperate attempt to deflect from the real issues and distort what Democrats say than admit what Republicans have done.

"Since September 11, 2001, Democrats have been urging the Bush administration to prioritize equipping our troops to win the war on terror, capturing Osama bin Laden and securing the homeland. So, it's no surprise that Rove's comment highlighted the Republicans' rhetoric and not their record.

"The Democratic Party's unified commitment to protecting this country, supporting our troops and honoring our Americans who have died in the war on terror has not and will not ever waver.

"For the good of the country, it's time for President Bush to show some leadership and unequivocally repudiate Rove's divisive and damaging political rhetoric."

6. One more voice
added to a rising chorus demanding that Bush and Rove apologize.

Rove said that the Repubs were ready for war after 9/11. Dean should say we know that now, because of the Downing Street Memo/minutes! And it wasn't because of the war on terror.

They took millions of dollars appropriated by Congress for the War in Afghanistan and put it into the War on Iraq, a totally illegal act, not to mention weakening the effort to get Bin Laden.

George Bush also said about the War on Terror 'you can't win it' or words to that effect. I never heard a Democrat say that!!

Glad Dean let him have it! Keep it up, Howard!!

7. Totally Agree! Felt that "Great Divide" When Seen Roves' Remarks
You hit it right on the neo-con nail.

Think about it: All they have left is to divide the "United States" of America. Been saying it since day 1! It's their grand motive.

Facism works this day. "Divide & Conquor." Hope the other half soon awaken to this and you know... they are.

24. Just when you thought they couldn't go any lower...
they go to the lowest, the abyss.

I just got finished reading all the threads here and John at Americablog has almost an entire page dedicated to this subject.
<http://americablog.blogspot.com/>
Here is an example:

It's pretty clear now that this was a set up orchestrated by the White House in order to deflect attention away from the disaster that is the war in Iraq, and Bush's plummeting polls.

1. The White House released the TEXT of Rove's speech today. According to my sources who know about such things, that NEVER happens. This is prima facie evidence that the White House coordinated this thing from the beginning.

Folks, these bastards dropped a nuclear bomb on us today, and it was intentional. Senator Durbin learned the hard way that you can't reason with these people. Durbin apologized and what did it get him? He's in every one of their press releases and attack ads today.

The Democratic Party had better realize that these people declared war today in a big way. We do not let this issue go until Karl Rove resigns. There IS no other issue in town, until Karl Rove resigns.

This isn't going to stop. What do you think is the best thing we can do?

Senator BRENT responds to comments made by Karl Rove

Edited on Thu Jun-23-05 04:31 PM by brentspeak

(er, if I was a Senator)

Apology? No, I don't ask for an apology from Mr.Rove. In fact, I'm grateful for what he said. It gives me an opportunity to speak about the differences between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to combatting terrorism.

It was a Democratic administration that captured and convicted the terrorists who attacked the WTC in 1993.

It was a Democrat who instituted the nation's first anti-terrorism policy, and who appointed the nation's first national coordinator of anti-terrorist efforts.

It was a Democrat who stopped the Al Qaeda millennium hijacking and bombing plots.

And a Democrat who stopped the planned attack to kill the Pope.

-- more --

And the DNC blog ain't bad either:

http://www.democrats.org/blog/comment/00012258.html

Rove is right: there are differences

White House spokesman Scott McClellan says that Karl Rove just meant that Democrats and Republicans had "different philosophies" when it comes to their reactions following 9/11. We agree. Our philosophies couldn't be more different when it comes to fighting international terrorism. Let's compare:

Democrats
Believe capturing the person primarily responsible for the attack should be a top priority.

Republicans
It's been four years, and Osama bin Laden is still free, even though Bush's CIA chief says he knows where he is.

Democrats
Investigate the intelligence failures that led to 9/11.

Republicans
Do everything in their power to block the 9/11 Commission from doing its work.

Democrats
Propose creating the Department of Homeland Security.

Republicans
Push tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

13. GO HOWARD!!! huzzah! finally!
this is what I've been saying for a long time: when Rove attacks, don't defend but instead point out its a TACTIC, explain how the tactic is supposed to work, and WHY they are using it!

that's the ONLY way to deflect Rovian bullcrap.

I'm GLAD someone in the dem leadership finally gets what I've been saying should have been our strategy against rove all along....unfortunately, I was suggesting this before the last election, but no takers.

Continue the simple campaign for the masses to imprint the ideas of Rove being cynical and divisive, and therefore unpatriotic!

More simple phrases need to be repeated by the DNC and our leaders over and over until it becomes well known and recited by most Americans. This is the Rovian approach.

Except we are imprinting the truth!

42. we should stop this ritual of demanding apologies
We should stop this ritual of demanding apologies. Since Rove and his toadies are telling nothing but lies, we should utterly disparage their tenuous grasp of the facts - and therefor the reality that this nation is facing. We should dismiss them as fools for being so uninformed about the deplorable state of their own administration and policies.

We need to LAUGH at these fuckers dismissively and then say "Ok America, let's move on to debate based on proven documented facts, not the magical thinking of an administration with a long track record of lies and ill-conceived, costly and failed policies.

We can get even tougher with these criminals. We need to deride and laugh at their continuous bullshit because no one's buying it anymore. And we should SAY that!

the Pubs do either. It's their form of making the Dems look submisive! Howard didn't apologize for anything he's said and I don't think he ever should! I don't think Durbin should have either! I think the responses should be, "If the comments had no shread of truth, the Pubs wouldn't be so upset, now, would they?" You're absolutely right about laughing at them and just being dismisive. That will just pi** them off more, and force them to look een more foolish!

Dean is the right prescription for our party at just the right time. I did not support the man during the primaries and I kick myself every cursed, god damn day since.

This morning on the "Matt Lauer Republican Hour" they showed Dean's picture when they used the phrase "liberal extremists." Dean self-identifies (or has) as a Centrist - whatever that means. These bastards keep moving the bar to the right and we've kept following as a party.

52. riposte
I had to look that one up!

riposte \rih-POST\, noun:
1. A quick thrust given after parrying an opponent's lunge in fencing.
2. A quick and effective reply by word or act.

intransitive verb:
To make a riposte.

She had an agile, teasing sense of humor that included a sure grasp of the absurd and an instinct for punchy ripostes.
--Sally Bedell Smith, Diana in Search of Herself

It was an inelegant riposte, especially for one so quick-witted as Neumann.
--Peter Gay, My German Question

When she told him how much she hated being called an old trout, he'd riposte: "The trout is the most beautiful of fish."
