Locked dupes push important topics quickly off the first pages, maybe some of your own.

Skinner and his team have built something wonderful. I have no patience for anyone here able to contribute who doesn't and then complains about the limited features. If it were up to me I would require a contribution to register.

I think that every browser will have a Control+F that will search for a word in a page. I used that system when I was new here

Both IE and Navigator have find functions under "Edit". (For those of us who rarely think of control-key shortcuts, even when they're easy, like "F" for "Find".)

When a thread gets locked, replies also get orphaned. So if the thread creator doesn't search for duplicates, then it falls on those (many) who reply to do so -- if they are worried about getting orphaned.

A little rudimentary teamwork can go a long way. It also makes us look better, helps trolls stand out more, and is useful practice for thread-waves.

My favorite web community requires all who would post to make a modest ($5) donation first. It does an amazing job of raising the bar -- almost all posts are intelligent and civil, as if the punks and flamers and wackjobs just can't bring themselves to pay even a token amount for the privilege of posting their spew.

Unfortunately , DU is awash in spew lately. I won't go into it, but I have never seen so much abuse, racism, and just plain wackery in the two-plus years I have been posting here. I think it is high time DU *required* all posting members to pay at least a token donation to the site. And really, if you care about the community, what's 5 or 10 bucks?

I too detest all the wasted threads in LBN. Half the time there is no need to search. The first version is usually right on the front page, since it's almost always someone posting the biggest stories of the day redundantly who ends up getting locked.

Is it just me, or has this place gone downhill a LOT lately?
