BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide car bomber slammed into a 7-ton U.S. military vehicle in Fallujah, killing at least five female Marines and wounding 10 more, the military told NBC News on Friday.

No further information was immediately available.

The attack, underscoring the durability of the insurgency in Iraq, came as President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari were to meet at the White House. Their agenda includes discussions on work being done to train Iraqi security forces — a precursor to bringing U.S. troops home — as well as efforts to draft a constitution and rebuild a nation still wracked by a violent insurgency more than two years after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime.

Overall, Thursday’s violence across Iraq left at least 20 civilians killed and 37 wounded.

21. That's where I'm at
Sad enough to make you cry. But, anymore, the story has to come early in the day for it to make me that upset, and this isn't nearly early enough.

Their families, they could *not* have seen this coming. They could not have thought this would happen, so, I feel as if it's going to be all that much more painful, for them. Probably demoralizing for the troops too; imagine, how nice it must have been for them, mostly men, to have a small group of American women with them, and then...gone. What a terrible shame. They could have done so much good too, in that role, those women. It's very sad.

9. A Marine convoy was hit west of Fallujah last night
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 08:13 AM by leftchick
They have not released the casualties from that yet. :(

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/06/24/iraq.main/

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A suicide car bomb targeting a U.S. Marine convoy exploded in Falluja, the volatile city west of Baghdad, causing an unknown number of casualties, the U.S. military said Friday.

The troops were assigned to II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), the military said.

Thursday night's attack came at the end of another particularly violent day in the Iraqi capital. Four car bombings killed at least 17 people and wounded as many as 60 others in the city Thursday, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said.

On edit...It is the same. From Steely Dan's link..

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8202434/

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide car bomber slammed into a 7-ton U.S. military vehicle in Fallujah on Friday, and military sources told NBC News that five female Marines were killed and 10 others wounded.

A review of casualty records indicates the attack is the single deadliest toll for female servicemembers in Iraq. Since the war started, 46 female soldiers have died in attacks or in accidents while in Iraq.

The vehicle, which had a total of 19 people on board, was ferrying members of a U.S. military civil affairs team headed to perform checkpoint searches of female Iraqi civilians, the officials said.

The team was assigned to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, which is based at Camp LeJeune, N.C.

So this was a separate attack with casualties too high for them to state? I suspect losses in Iraq are high enough to make political dynamite, so they are lying harder than usual.

30. Well if we wish to follow that logic ...
The protectors of us women troops should pass laws to NOT allow women in any position. Gee, I joined the military soon after integration during the 70s. Perhaps we need a separation of the sexes like the Fundy and Islamic religions? Oh yeah, let's bring back to good ole' Women's Army Corps and make it the ONLY field open to the distaff? That'll keep us in our place, aye? :sarcasm:

But Seriously, women can perform many highly skilled military functions. The military consists of much more than the need for the strapping muscular infantry man in combat intensive areas.

If the Right Wing Republicans wish to push through legislation that would FORBID Women to serve in the Middle East, I would NOT protest. Well, not much BUT only as long as Women Marines are replaced, to a person, with a Young Strong Coulter-esque Male REPUBLICANS. :applause: AIRBORNE! & SEMPER FI!

39. Please understand that women are PRESENTLY in ground
combat positions because there is NO front line. We can't avoid it if we choose to serve EQUALLY with the men.

These women MPs can handle cal .50s. They are already integrated into the military.

You have lost that battle beginning in 1979 when myself and a few other women were initially permitted into the Army Infantry School known as Airborne (Fort Benning, Georgia).

Kindly come with me into the present?

No turning back. ;)

And as a fairly old timer here, "Welcome to DU." :hi:

I'm a little rough around the edges but considered by most as a liberal to moderate democrat ... well, when I'm pissed at the DNC, I'm often tempted to go Independent or Green. <g>

Guess having a daughter makes me want her to have the opportunities that I didn't have ... well in the CIVILIAN world. Even at the tender young age of 11 y.o. she knows and understand that nows not the time (while Neo-Cons are in charge) to serve in the military.

I hope you post more and enjoy your stay here fellow military veteran. :patriot:

177. Thank you
And well wishes to you! I enjoy your posts, and I agree with you, this is a fine place to be. So cool to read from another female military vet, and one that learned how to get her hands dirty, not just admin wearing blue uniforms except on office clean-up days, you know? I don't mean to put those people down, but in many cases, our experiences were different. And messier :)

Well, I'm a libertarian (boo hiss, I can hear it in the background now), but am *firmly* planted on the strongest side opposing Bush. I think, at this point, while folks can argue for the freedom of capitalism, or against the intrinsic evils of capitalism, we can all agree that it's a large, unrepresentative government gone amok that is the problem. So, from that point of view, I don't have a problem falling in with the Democrats. Democrats and Libertarians don't agree on all issues, but we most certainly do agree that tyranny is Wrong with a capital T. I'm here to join in the fight.

And I try to convince other Libs as I go too!

I remember, on another board, there's an avowed communist who I began agreeing with, during this whole Bush ordeal. Slowly at first, and then, just about anytime something happened, he sounded more rational than the republicans. That's when I knew things were REALLY screwed up, when he could point so easily to the problems and the lies, forgetting politics and parties. At that point, it didn't matter what our different beliefs and percieved solutions were, we were the only one's trying to identify the real problems. Scary.

This is a fine place to be, a much needed relief, with much needed personal interpretations and sound people who have sane thoughts, along with the more frantic "What's going on!" thoughts that every rational person *should* be having. On a daily basis, now.

Thanks for the welcome! :)

160. OK. Explain exactly where
combat positions are in Iraq these days. Makes no sense. We're fighting terrorists/insurgents...people who use car bombs. Not an organized army. Face it. There are no combat positions in this mess. Anyone is a target. Anyone. Which shows the fallacy of the "women in combat" anachronism in today's military actions.
As for the "small number of women physically up to the job", get real. My son is a Marine. The female Marines get the exact same training as the men. The same. You'd be very hard pressed to find a bunch of college student males who could get through boot camp.
Your chauvinism is outdated.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 09:02 AM by mike_c
Would their deaths have been any less horrible? There's no good outcome from this-- the real tragedy wasn't those marines' death-- it was their presence in Iraq. If they had lived, it would have been to support the subjegation, occupation, and murder of Iraqis. America must stop this madness and bring all the troops back from Iraq now!

They were members of a Civil Affairs team being sent to help search Iraqi females coming through the checkpoints. I would assume that if attacked they would have defended themselves, but their main job was
conduct searches of female Iraqis.

Though I caanot refute your statement about supporting the subjegation, occupation.

I want these bastards, George, Cheney, Rummy, and all those lying Generals who sit within the safe confines of the Pentagon, on the ground in Iraq,

taking photo-ops of cutting the ribbons on the opening of the new Iraqi power plants, hospitals, schools, etc., etc., which they continually call the success's.

I don't care if these troops were men or women, they are someones child, wife, mother, sister, brother, father, etc. Those troops that have survived and return home with horrendous injuries that they will carry with them for the remainder of their lives and reminders to them and their loved ones of the real cost of war.

And it's the liberals fault, oh, ain't that the most shameful slap of all.

Marines killed in Falluja attack
Some of casualties are women, U.S. official says

Friday, June 24, 2005; Posted: 10:15 a.m. EDT (14:15 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A suicide vehicle bomb killed two U.S. Marines and left four others unaccounted for when it exploded near their convoy in Falluja, the volatile city west of Baghdad, a U.S. military official said Friday.

Some of the casualties were women, the official said. The troops were assigned to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

Thursday night's attack came at the end of another particularly violent day in the Iraqi capital. Four car bombings killed at least 17 people and wounded as many as 60 others in the city Thursday, the Iraqi Defense Ministry said.

A suicide attack near an old mall in the Karada area killed seven civilians and wounded 10 others, the defense ministry said, while the Iraqi police put the death toll at 12 civilians and three police officers, with 50 wounded.

Three police officers and seven civilians died in a second suicide blast targeting an Iraqi police patrol near a gas station, the ministry said. Ten civilians were wounded.

Another 13 Marines were wounded in the Thursday night attack, spokesman Bryan Whitman. Some women were among the casualties, he said.

At least 1,730 members of the U.S. military have died since the war began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The car bomber targeted troops assigned to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, an earlier military statement said. Fallujah, the Anbar province town 40 miles west of Baghdad, was the scene of a large-scale campaign in November by U.S. troops to rout militants.

Updated: 9:29 a.m. ET June 24, 2005

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A suicide car bomber slammed into a 7-ton U.S. military vehicle in Fallujah on Friday, and Marine sources told NBC News that five Marines were killed and 10 others wounded.

Three of the dead were female Marines and two male, the sources said. Earlier reports said all five were women.

In any case, a review of casualty records indicates the attack is the single deadliest toll for female servicemembers in Iraq. Since the war started, 44 female soldiers have died in attacks or in accidents while in Iraq.

The vehicle, which had 19 people on board, was ferrying members of a U.S. military civil affairs team headed to perform checkpoint searches of female Iraqi civilians, the officials said.

Every story about "bad" for USA in Iraq ALWAYS has a 1 to 2.4 Star rating. If the story is pro Bush Crime Family in Iraq Slaughter the ratings are high. But other stories deemed anti GOP/Bush Crime Family reguarding domestic issues or other aWol screw=ups in N. Korea, China, Cuba... have a high Star vote rating. Therefore it is NOT Freepers with a pro GOP agenda.

It is the NSA's Blackbox hooked up to the ISPs.

I've posted more than 2 dozen example over the last 3 weeks for a record of facts for the trial.

This associate graph is not correct. I've proved beyond a reasonable doubt that several of the reported "suicide body bombs" were actually "car bombs" by the blast patterns ripping the vehicles open, upward and outward which is impossible if the bombs were detonated outside the vehicles.

There have been women getting killed in Iraq since it started over two years ago. And there were a number of women killed in the First Gulf War. Don't know much about the United States in Vietnam, but the Soviets had plenty of women fighting and dying in their front lines in WWII.

179. If some or all of the dead were female, it means there are more
angles for the press and public to examine and there is going to be more coverage in the press that Rove cannot control.

For example a poster above mentioned the fact the women are not meant to be at the Front Line- so any questions asked would quickly reveal that there is no front line and that there is no safe place for the troops etc.

He particularly didn't want this around the time * was giving a "look what progress we are making!" type press conference.

All deaths are equally tragic- male, female, American, Iraqi and other. This killing has to be stopped.

Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 12:19 PM by confludemocrat
Just as they are blaming democrats and liberals for being negative about the war along with at least 60% of the people, five women get blown up being sent into the heart of the disaster (noncombatants?, they were being used as combatants, that's where we are in this war), when they are supposed to be security people there to search suspected female suicide bombers, I heard.

People are long past sick of this mess, and Bush and Abizaid merely sound like they are speaking for themselves-covering their own asses.

But yes, cute bue-eyed blondes being covered throws the war into the faces of it's flagging supporters, it's who they care about most, I am certain.

182. hmmm
Well, not to blow your theory, but I am a woman, and I was in the military. I don't care if they had blue eyes or not, I have my own. They chose to go, so I pity them no more than any other troop. I pity them no less either.

I think the story got traffic here because, well it IS the most women ever killed at one time in war, and we're wondering what it will do to public perception. I'd imagine most people here would consider *themselves* above such shallow thoughts as to be suddenly shocked and dismayed by the fact that, oh gee, women die in war too. NO, I'd say we more likely are watching what those typical mass media-swallowing types say about it, how THEY react.

It's the unusual nature of this story and it's potential impact on attitudes toward this war that got my attention. Perhaps my personal history as well.

192. It's human nature to be more emotional about women and children.
It's biology and its cultural. It's natural to be more shocked when things happen to women or children. I'm not saying that it's preferable, but it's our nature. Losing 5 women in war, in one act of violence, is unprecedented in this war. Forgive us for being more passionate about this loss. Every death our troops have suffered is tragic... no judgements here about whose death is more tragic.

178. US military has only one option left to save situation: strategic retreat
to Kuwait and Qatar, etc. This forces the Iraqis themselves to shit or get off the pot. The ensuing civil war will either settle the situation, with foreign jihadis being killed off by the locals, and the Iraqis themselves restoring order, OR, they will invite the US troops back in.

An alternative is selective air support for the Iraqis side in the civil war from those bases in Kuwait, Qatar.

This is the only way to achieve what 'success' Sen Lindsey Graham seeks and the exit strategy that eludes the Republican war-mongers. It lowers US casualties and takes the media out of the situation that now cannot be ignored: Iraq is a quagmire.

188. Yep. When Bush abandoned the Powell Doctrine
he set the stage for all the Vietnam comparisons. This looks like a Tet coming on. But, as I've said, if the situation is to be salvaged at all, the military must abandon Baghdad as the 'capital' and move the 'green zone' to a defensible place in the desert to the south either inside Kuwait or nearer to Kuwait; the insurgents will have to meet their fate in jihad with the 'locals' they have killed.

Islam needs to show the same treatment the Knights Templar received from Oct 13, 1307, when the Pope and King of France destroyed them. Those 'holy warriors' ended up being sacrificed...the same thing will need to occur in these Islamic countries. They need to understand that in order for progress to be made (and to avoid rewrites to books like "What Went Wrong" by Bernard Lewis) they need to restrain their own jihadi elements THEMSELVES, or pay a high price. This lesson the West cannot teach them. Allah the merciful and compassionate will teach them.

191. Tragic. This may be the final act that pushes Americans over the edge.
I think deaths like these, though all are tragic, will be a wake up call for Americans. I think Bush should expect poll numbers in the low 30s soon. All of the deaths have been heartwrenching, but most people will be even more moved by losing 5 female Marines like that.

What have we created in Iraq?

194. Do we have all female units?
:wtf:

Why on earth are the female units travelling in groups like this? I thought we stopped the segregated unit bullshit back when Truman was president.

Also the picture on the yahoo AP article:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050624/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_050624174253;_ylt=ArFgW0DBU7YawJXDPGmlQF1X6GMA;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl

tells another story: note the masked man. That guy is an Iraqi 'guard' whatever that means. What it means to me is that the Iraqification of the war is so successful that the friendly Iraqi units have to wear masks so that they don't get lynched by their neighbors. Oh this is going so well.
