Bush shrugs off slump in polls; jokes about second-term "quagmire"

WHITE HOUSE President Bush is shrugging off the polls showing his job approval rating at low ebb.

At a news conference with Iraq's visiting prime minister, Bush jokingly suggested the word "quagmire" to a reporter asking about a possible "second-term slump."

The president says he knows U-S troops have a difficult mission in Iraq against a bloodthirsty and determined enemy.

And he says on domestic issues, he's asking Congress to "take on some big tasks." He says he's not surprised his idea for a Social Security overhaul has met stiff resistance from lawmakers.

Bush added: "This is a time of testing. It's a critical time."

33. Biden replay on C-span
while waiting for a pain pill to kick in - I caught a replay of Biden speaking at the Brookings Insitute about Iraq.

related to bush* smirking things off - Biden said there was a credibility gap between bush*, Iraq and the American People. (like duuuuhhhh)

He went on to say that bush* needs to speak on prime time and level with the people. Biden said he understands that bush* is planning on a prime time speech.

my opinion on this - bush* is just going to blow more smoke up our collective skirts, spin around several times and then send in his choir to sing his praises while bashing those who oppose him.

he's been ducking, dodging, hiding and lying to us all along - one speech isn't going to do it

16. Remember the Star Trek Nazi episode?
Remember the Star Trek Nazi episode with the planet that copied the Nazis? A previous Starfleet starship had landed there and the Captain had introduced the natives to Nazi principles and he ended up a drugged figurehead. His speeches were a string of sound bites pulled together from previous speeches. That's what I think of every time I hear * speak.

26. "This is a time of testing."
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 02:28 PM by necso
This is a key line. It's fundie-think -- and fundie-talk. To (some of) the fundies, when a plan goes awry, it's not time to reexamine and modify the plan, but rather it's time to have (increase one's) "faith" -- and continue on in the same course, because one is being "tested" in one's faith and the "seeming" (actual) failure is to be ignored.

Now, mind you, virtually the whole of scientific/technological advancement is based upon seeing whether or not one's plan (idea, theory, etc) is borne out in reality and modifying this plan (etc) as necessary based on the actual, measurable (perceivable) feedback from reality... And even the "smarter" animals try different things when something they attempt fails. (They learn and adapt.)

But so not these fundies (and those of similar mindset). And here the CinC is appealing to his core support group to continue (and increase) their support of him -- not based on all that (negative) feedback from reality -- but as a matter of faith in him as an agent of God.

Of course, he's scamming them by passing off his arrogance and pig-headedness as faith. And they have no excuse for falling for it, because their (supposed) own holy book warns them of such things.
